Race before the feast: 9 turkey trots and Thanksgiving runs in suburbs

The holiday season is almost here, and with it comes plenty of high-calorie temptations.

Before you tuck into that Thanksgiving dinner, why not boost your metabolism with a little exercise?

Here are nine turkey trots and Thanksgiving-themed races where you can get a leg up on the start of the holidays.

Addison 5K Turkey Trot

8 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, Centennial Park, 1776 W. Centennial Place, Addison. Race-day registration starts at 6:30 a.m. Course goes through Centennial Park and along neighborhood streets. $25. Medals for top finishers. addisonparks.org.

Twisted Turkey Triathlon

7:30 to 9 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 18, at Fitness Center at the Buffalo Grove Park District, 601 W. Deerfield Parkway, Buffalo Grove. Friendly holiday competition in the form of a 10-minute swim, 20-minute run and 40-minute bike. Lisle Turkey Trot Tune-Up 5K

7:30 to 11 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 18. Registration at 9 a.m. with race starting at Lisle High School, 1800 Short St. A portion of the proceeds from this race will go the Lisle Lions Club & Lisle Area Chamber of Commerce Scholarship Fund. $35, $40 on race day. lislechamber.com.

The Fox and the Turkey Races

7:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 22, Peg Bond Center, 151 Island Ave., Batavia. 22nd annual 4-mile and 1-mile youth race along the Fox River to benefit Batavia Interfaith Food Pantry. Online registration through Nov. 19. $35, $15 for youth mile, plus a nonperishable food donation. foxrivertrailrunners.org

Running With the Lions 5K Run/Walk

8 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 22, Life Time Fitness, 451 Rolls Road, Algonquin. Algonquin Lions Club fundraiser to raise money for Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Interfaith Food Pantry and others. $25 or $30 on race day. www.lionsclubofalgonquin.org.

Turkey Trot

8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 22, at Harper College, 1200 W. Algonquin Road, Palatine. This annual race is a Palatine tradition. Work off your turkey before you even eat dinner with a two-mile, five-mile or the kids drumstick dash. Preregistration ends Nov. 15. Glen Ellyn Turkey Trot

8 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 22, Lake Ellyn Park, 645 Lenox Road, Glen Ellyn. Five-mile run, jog or walk; strollers are welcome. Bring nonperishable items for Glen Ellyn Food Pantry. Free. gepark.org

Naperville Noon Lions Turkey Trot 5K

8 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 22, Naperville Central High School, 440 W. Aurora Ave., Naperville. 21st annual run/walk along a fast, flat course through downtown Naperville. $25 to $35. napervilleturkeytrot.com.

Roselle Turkey Tango Trot 5K

8 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 22, Lake Park High School West Campus, 500 W. Bryn Mawr Ave., Roselle. Course starts and ends at high school. Registration: $30. All proceeds going to assist those in need in Roselle. Last year it contributed to the local food pantries, the holiday giving tree project, and assisted two Roselle children with medical needs. www.roselle5k.com.
