Following a recent cold snap, a Black-Crowned Night Heron is moved back to its outdoor Willowbrook Wildlife Center cage in Glen Ellyn. This Illinois endangered bird waisted no time digesting an afternoon fish meal. When photographing birds, it's important to have a clean background. This is achieved by a combination of using a longer lens and getting closer to the subject. This photo was published in the Perspective column in the print edition.

One of the first big snows fell on a mid-December weekend, so I knew I'd be out looking for snow plows, sledders, and the like. But I needed to take a moment to soak in some quiet beauty as well. This view at Fabyan Forest Preserve in Geneva looked to me like Narnia from “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” by C.S. Lewis. When I framed it, the best way the scene looked had the 15 speed limit sign in the corner, which made me chuckle, so I didn't crop it out on purpose. So in other words, slow down and absorb the beauty of nature. This photo was published in the weekly Perspective column in the print edition.

Kathleen Seckel, 5, of St. Charles, and her brother, Joe, 7, use a ruler to measure a 5-inch snow drift during the “Homeschool Explorations: The Science of Snow” program led by Kane County Forest Preserve naturalist Josh Libman at Leroy Oakes in St. Charles on Thursday. The little naturalists measured drifts from 5 to 9 inches while on the trail. The siblings just started being home schooled last week and this was their first time attending one of the programs offered by the forest preserve.
