St. Viator, Prospect and Conant qualify for sectional

Only the strongest survived a rugged collection of boys golf teams in Class 3A regional action Tuesday at Mount Prospect Golf Course.

Those advancing as teams to the next Monday’s Huntley sectional are team champion St. Viator (299), runner-up Deerfield (300) and third-place Prospect (304).

Highland Park (308) placed fourth in the team race, and Stevenson was fifth (315).

Medalist honors went to Highland Park’s Patrick Flavin, who shot a 3-under-par 68.

St. Viator senior Robert Renner was next at 70, followed by Deerfield Ian Kelsey (71). Prospect’s Josh Johnson, Stevenson’s Jerry Pan and St. Viator’s John Carlson each shot 73.

Plenty of players from the Mid-Suburban League also earned a chance to compete at sectional as individuals.

Brandon Matchen (79), Matt Eilrich (80) and Mike DeSalvo (81) of Buffalo Grove (323) advanced, along with Ken Mleko (80) and Matt Johnstone (81) of Hersey (336).

Coach Tom Martindale saw Prospect, the Mid-Suburban League’s runner-up, delivere six scores under 80. In addition to Johnson’s 73, the Knights got a 74 from Reid Dahlstrom, a 78 from Grant Gavin and 79s from Ralph Tenuta, Jack Kavanagh and Jacob Schwister.

St. Viator, the East Suburban Catholic Conference runner-up, counted a 77 from Liam Warner and a 79 from Hudson Luthringshausen in addition to the scores from Renner and Carlson.

Stevenson got a 79 from Luke Feder and an 81 from Chris Krebs; they will join Pan in the Huntley sectional, which will be contested at Blackstone Golf Club in Marengo, as individual competitors.

The low scores for Rolling Meadows (364) came from Alex Miller and Jimmy Ingolia, with 90s.

Wheeling’s best effort came from Tyler Testa (94).

Conant regional

The host school earned a Class 3A sectional berth with a runner-up team finish at Poplar Creek Country Club.

Addison Trail took top honors at 321, with Conant at 328. Glenbard North earned the final team sectional qualification spot with 334 — a single stroke ahead of Lake Park (335).

Conant will compete in Monday’s Naperville Central sectional, which will be held at Springbrook Golf Course in Naperville.

Seniors Jon Chang and Zach Prill both shot 79 to lead Conant, which also counted an 82 from senior Christian Dorman and an 88 from senior Mike Malaret.

Glenbard North sophomore Nick Brady earned medalist honors with a 74.

Area players advancing to sectional competition as individuals were Hoffman Estates junior Jon D’Amico (81), Elk Grove junior Jordan Guerrero (81) and Schaumburg freshman Miguel Go (87).
