5K celebrates former Glenbard North coach

The 10th annual Bud’s Run, in remembrance of former Glenbard North High School cross county and track coach Harold “Bud” Swanson, was held Saturday in Carol Stream.

Hundreds of runners hit the pavement in the rain at the Ross Ferraro Town Center near the high school where Swanson coached for more than 15 years.

He died in April 2003, just four months after being diagnosed with sarcoma, a rare form of cancer.

Brett Lustgarten, 23, of Carol Stream was the overall winner in the 5K race. He finished third in 2012, first in 2011 and second in 2010.

Previous races raised $82,000 for Sarcoma Foundation of America since the first run in 2004, and $10,000 to $11,000 more is expected this year, said Swanson’s widow, Sharon, who also serves as race director.
