Feece, Newman share no-hitter for Vernon Hills

Pitching was the story for Vernon Hills’ baseball team Wednesday.

Tyler Feece struck out 14 batters over 6 shutout innings and reliever Nick Newman finished up, as they combined on a no-hitter in the Cougars’ 6-0 win over Round Lake in North Suburban Prairie Division action.

The VH pitching tandem received all the run support it needed in the top of the first.

Pat Crowley led off the game with a single. Jordan Freibrun and Feece (triple, 2 RBI) drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. Joey Marras then put the Cougars up 2-0 with a single.

Dylan McNamara drove in the third and final run of the inning when his sacrifice fly plated courtesy runner Andrew Willey.

The offense continued in the second when Jake Boyer and Brett Peterson drew back-to-back walks. They both scored on Feece’s triple.

As the temperature dropped, the Vernon Hills offense also went cold.

“Credit Round Lake pitcher Alex Gibson,” Cougars coach Jay Czarnecki said.

Gibson (6 strikeouts) held the Cougars scoreless until the final inning, when Crowley scored on a wild pitch.

Libertyville 9, Palatine 8: Matt Vogt belted a grand slam, and the Wildcats scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull out the nonconference win.

Vogt also doubled, as did Kevin Calamari, P.J. Neumann and Jimmy Govern for Libertyville. Govern and Alec Semersky each knocked in a pair of runs.

Palatine had scored twice in the top of the sixth to take an 8-6 lead.

Warren 9, Lake Zurich 2: The Blue Devils beat the Bears for the second day in a row, as Andrew Hill earned the win and went 1-for-3 with a triple, walks and run scored.

Justin Cobe went 2-for-3, with a walk, an RBI and 3 runs scored for Warren, and Dom Cuevas was 2-for-4 with a double, 2 RBI and run scored.

Stevenson 12, Zion-Benton 2: The visiting Patriots defeated the Zee-Bees for the second straight day, as Jordan Sheinkop struck out 11 batters in a five-innning, complete-game effort, while Mitchell Goll (2 RBI) and Jimmy Marchese each went 3-for-4 to lead the offense.

Stevenson (2-1, 2-0) also received strong offensive performances from Sean Wilson (2-for-3, 3 runs) and Eric Naegele (2-for-4, 2 RBI). Marchese, Wilson and Austin Black each doubled.

Grayslake North 2, Antioch 1: Ryan Gross pitched 4 innings, and Alex Alvarez went the final 3 for the host Knights in the nonconference game.

Antioch received 2 hits apiece from Jerry LaSaint and Colin Prather.

Grant 12, North Chicago 0: The Bulldogs topped the Warhawks for the second time in as many days in North Suburban Prairie action.

Jeremy Cokefair earned the win, and Danny Farhat had a single and 2 RBI.

Wauconda 8, Lakes 7: Ryan Gick tripled and earned the save for winning pitcher Ben Peterson, as the Bulldogs captured the North Suburban Prairie contest.

Jeff Lindberg had a double for Wauconda
