Three ECC golfers make nationals

The Elgin Community College men’s golf team will be sending three individuals to the NJCAA Division II national championship tournament next spring.

South Elgin graduate Ryan Pondel, an ECC sophomore, shot a 54-hole total of 224 to tie for first place at the Region IV tournament, which was played at Prairie View in Byron over the weekend. Pondel lost a playoff for first place to Cory Bender of Black Hawk.

Also qualifying for nationals for the Spartans were Burlington Central grad Matt Allison, who finished sixth with a 230, and Dundee-Crown alum Anthony Cardelli with a 234, which was ninth. All three ECC golfers shot 74s in the final round on Sunday.

Black Hawk won the team championship with a 916. Sauk Valley was second at 951 and ECC third with a 952.

The national tournament will be played May 19-24, 2013 at Goose Pond Colony in Scottsboro, Ala.
