Briefs: Man indicted in connection to comic book theft
A DuPage County grand jury indicted a 27-year-old Des Plaines man on charges he used a forged check to buy a classic 1963 Spider-Man comic book from a Naperville store, court records released Wednesday said. Scott K. Meherg, 9112 Hollyberry Ave., is facing two counts of forgery and two counts of theft. He is accused of writing a bad check for $980.99 from LaSalle Bank on Dec. 10 at Graham Crackers Comics in Naperville. A judge has issued a $100,000 warrant for Meherg's arrest. Naperville police said they have information that Meherg is out of the country. He was indicted Tuesday and remains at-large.
Chess champ to play 30
Area residents have a rare opportunity to see an international chess grandmaster take on 30 opponents simultaneously in Lombard. John Fedorowicz, a four-time World Open chess champion who is ranked fourth among American-born players, will test his talent 7 p.m. Friday at Helen Plum Library, 110 W. Dist. 203 adds bus service
Naperville Unit District 203 will offer additional bus service this year for middle school students staying after school for extra help. The buses will be available three to four days a week throughout the year. Superintendent Alan Leis said the district wants to make sure students are getting the academic support they need without worrying about having a ride home.
Flood aid fundraiser
A yard and rummage sale to benefit the American Red Cross for flood victim aid will be from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at Daniel & Associates Real Estate, 465 E. Roosevelt Road, West Chicago. Donations are welcome and can be dropped off today at the office. Daniel & Associates hosted a similar fundraiser after Hurricane Katrina and raised more than $1,500 for aid. Winfield hospital makes list
Central DuPage Hospital has been named one of the most wired hospitals in the country by a by an industry magazine. The list of the 100 most wired hospitals, published by Hospitals and Health Networks magazine, focuses on how hospitals use information technology to improve patient care, business operations and customer service. This is the fourth year the Winfield hospital has made the annual listing.
Steven Isoye named to IMSA board
The Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy board of trustees has elected educational leader Steven Isoye of Chicago as its fifth chairman. Isoye is principal of Maine East High School in Park Ridge. An IMSA trustee since 1998, Isoye most recently served as first vice chairman. He also serves on the academy's Strategic Planning Team. Isoye succeeds scientist Luis Nuñez as chairman of the IMSA board. Other past chairs were business leaders James D. Pearson, John H. McEachern Jr. and Sheila Griffin. Isoye is the first educator to serve in the role.
