Wrap: Jacobs swipes 2 from D-C; BC tops WC
Ricky Ames wasn't great Friday night.
But with Jacobs' bats smacking away, he didn't need to be.
Ames pitched a complete game behind 4 early runs as he led the Golden Eagles to a 5-4 Fox Valley Conference Valley Division baseball victory.
Mike Castillo held the Golden Eagles' 6-0 lead from Wednesday's suspended game to give Jacobs another win on the day. Jacobs led 6-0 at home when the game was called after heavy rains halted play in the top of the fifth inning.
Castillo (4-0) struck out 7 batters Wednesday night and allowed 2 hits before retiring the final 7 batters he faced. Ben Rodriguez (3-3) took the loss for the Chargers (11-10, 4-5).
Ames (2-0) had a different approach.
"Ricky really went out there and battled," said Jacobs assistant coach John Sarna, 1 of 3 assistant coaches filling in for head coach Eric Sanders, who was at his son's graduation from Southern Illinois University.
Ames aged well.
After allowing Bill Peterson, who was pinch running for catcher Brendon Schumacher, to score the trying run in the fourth, Ames allowed 2 hits and 0 runs in the final three innings.
"We were pumped for the games," said Ames, who finished allowing 2 earned runs off of 7 hits. "We want to go out there and win every inning. Our coach wasn't here and we wanted to win it for him."
The junior also got some good work on his pickoff plays.
Dundee-Crown had runners picked off in the third, fourth and fifth innings. The Chargers also left 6 runners stranded in the game.
"On a scale of 1 to 10, our focus was a 2," Dundee-Crown coach Fred Bencriscutto said. "When we have plays we are supposed to make, then we compound things."
The lack of focus showed as Dundee-Crown allowed Johnny Amann to score the winning run in the sixth. Logan Kissak (1-1) walked Amann with one out in the sixth. Amann stole second and took third on an error. Kissak got the next batter out and had 2 strikes on Matt Igara, but hit him with a pitch.
Dan Kilchenman came in to relive Kissak, but Ryan Lesner hit in Amann for the go-ahead run.
Dundee-Crown responded to Jacobs' 2-0 lead by scoring twice in the first. Willie Larsen and Kissak reached base on the Golden Eagles' only 2 errors of the game. First baseman Mike Zozokos' single scored both Kissak and Larsen to tie the game at 2.
Jacobs' second baseman Jake Vojtsek returned the favor after leading off the second inning by reaching base on an error. Amann jacked an RBI double to score Vojtsek and Igara had a sacrifice fly to score Kyle Magnuson, who singled.
