Bartlett's Gates goes 5-2 at state

Fox Valley area players bowed out of the IHSA state tennis tournament Friday but not without a fight.

Bartlett freshman Jennifer Gates won three more matches before being eliminated in the seventh round of the consolation bracket. Gates finished her first IHSA tournament with a 5-2 record, winning three straight matches on Friday after losing the first set.

After going 2-1 Thursday, Gates defeated Marisa Thome of Crystal Lake South (3-6, 6-3, 6-3), Tyra Buss of Mt. Carmel (3-6, 6-3, 6-4) and Nell Boyd of Buffalo Grove (4-6, 6-4, 6-3) before losing to Cassie Kovach of Benet 6-2, 6-0.

The Crystal Lake South doubles team of Abbey Kolarczyk and Rachel Siemon, who won their first two matches on Thursday before losing, was eliminated in their first match Friday, falling to Kim Warpecha and Emma Adcock of Hinsdale South in the fourth round of the consolation bracket 6-3, 6-2.

Heading into today's final round, Lake Forest leads the team standings with 36 points. Hinsdale Central is in second with 32 and New Trier in third with 31.
