Cary-Grove just keeps rolling along, blows by Jacobs
Jacobs never had a chance. The Golden Eagles were completely overwhelmed by powerful Cary-Grove.
In a swift 33 minutes, the Trojans disposed of Jacobs 25-16, 25-8 in a Fox Valley Conference Valley Division girls volleyball match in Cary Thursday night.
The Trojans, 15-0 on the season and 2-0 in FVC Valley Division play, won their 31st overall match dating back to last season.
"The speed of the game is so fast when you play Cary,'' said Jacobs coach Lisa Dwyer. "We were very happy with the way we played in the first game, but disappointed in the way we played the second game. They are an extremely good offensive team. We can learn from our mistakes and fix them before we play them again."
In Game 1, the Trojans surged to victory late. Nursing a slim 3-point 17-14 lead, Cary-Grove seized control with 7 straight points. Three kills from Ashley Rosch and 2 kills by Allison Whimpey propelled the Trojans to a 10-point 24-14 advantage.
A kill by Rosch gave Cary-Grove Game 1.
The Trojans started fast in Game 2 and never let up. A kill by Melanie Jereb gave Cary-Grove a 13-3 lead and the rout was on. Cary-Grove's biggest lead was 22-5 after a kill by Kelly Lamberti.
An ace by Lamberti gave the Trojans the game and match.
"I was happy with our strong focus tonight," said Cary-Grove coach Patty Langanis. "We made some big adjustments in the second game and really played well. Jacobs is a quick scrappy team and they played us really tough in the first game. We are playing very well as a team. "
Lamberti paced the Trojans' balanced attack with 7 kills, 4 blocks and 3 aces. Rosch had 5 kills while Jereb had 4 kills and 3 aces. Setter Colleen Smith collected 19 assists to go along with 3 kills and 2 aces.
"This is a very close team and we are having a lot of fun right now," said Jereb. "We are like sisters. We are really communicating as a team and playing with a lot of heart."
Alyssa Ehrhardt led the Jacobs offense with 9 kills and 3 blocks. Elise Charron added 4 kills and setter Quinn Leuhring had 11 assists for the Golden Eagles.
