Antioch takes Prairie lead

Antioch's softball team took over sole possession of first place in the North Suburban Prairie Division on Tuesday.

The visiting Sequoits jumped out to an early lead against Grant and hung on for a 6-3 victory.

Antioch (16-4) improved to 7-0 in the NSC Prairie, while Grant (15-11) fell to 6-1 in the division.

Antioch scored 3 runs in the first off Bulldogs ace Brie Brugioni, with Samie Seamon singling, Olivia Duehr doubling and Allie Anttila tripling.

Brugioni allowed only 2 more hits the rest of the game. She struck out the side in the first and finished with 13 strikeouts.

Duehr earned the win, allowing 2 earned runs. She fanned eight, walked one and allowed 5 hits. Rachel DePouw went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI for the Bulldogs.

Anttila was 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Sequoits.

The two teams play each other again today, this time at Antioch.

Warren 1, Lake Zurich 0: Kayla Hurd cooled off the Bears, firing a 3-hitter to outduel Megan Mattera.

Warren (20-6) not only won its 20th game but improved to 6-1 in the North Suburban Lake Division to pull into a three-way tie for first with Lake Zurich (15-9, 6-1) and Zion-Benton.

Hurd gave herself the only run she needed in the bottom of the first with an RBI single. She did it again in the fifth and finished 3-for-3. Both times her singles scored Lindsay Horwitz (2-for-4).

In the circle, Hurd struck out six and walked two.

Mattera struck out four and walked five.

Stevenson 5, Carmel 1: A 3-run first inning jump-started the visiting Patriots in their nonconference win in Mundelein.

Ashley Niedermayer led the way offensively for Stevenson (16-10), going 3-for-4 with a double and run scored. The Patriots received 2 hits apiece from Emma Patrash (run), Allie Micucci (RBI) and Jordan Willis (RBI).

Micucci notched the win, striking out 11, walking one and allowing 5 hits. One of the hits was a home run to the Corsairs' Sally Snarski.
