School’s healthy food program impressive

I am writing in regards to the article titled “No cupcakes here!” in the Oct. 31 Health and Fitness section of the Daily Herald.

The healthy food program at the Northeast Elementary Magnet School is totally impressive. I am completely onboard with getting younger children to eat healthier, and Northeast Elementary has not only accomplished that but also has gotten students to actually enjoy the healthy food.

It is no wonder to me that the school received a gold medal from the Alliance for a Healthier Generation. It is great to see an elementary school taking control of the obesity issue and getting rewarded for it.

Something that surprised me about Northeast Elementary was that it is not located in highly populated, well-known suburban area. Instead, the school is located in downstate Danville, with a population of only about 30,000. This shows that rich, high-status schools are not the only ones that can make a difference for their students and get recognized for it. Northeast Elementary can definitely stand as a role model for other schools working toward making students healthier.

I wish my elementary school had taken the same steps as Northeast Elementary toward making students healthier. The students definitely showed improvement in becoming more active and willingly staying away from junk food. I would definitely give Northeast Elementary a gold medal of my approval for caring about students’ health and overall well-being.
