ECC speaker to discuss cultural differences in China, India

The Elgin Community College Humanities Center Speaker Series continues Tuesday, Nov. 8, with a presentation by James Rubenstein, a geography professor from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. The free event starts at 12:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Advanced Technology Center.

Rubenstein will discuss issues on the effects of cultural differences and economic and political developments in India and China.

“People are plugged into a global economy and culture, producing a world that is more uniform, integrated and interdependent,” Rubenstein said in news release. “Yet despite globalization, economic specialization and cultural differences among places not only persist, but actually flourish.”

Sponsored by the Humanities Center, the series aims to bring renowned speakers to ECC's campus. Past participants have included a New York City artist, an American pastor in Peru and former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.

Later in the month, nationally acclaimed poet, actor and playwright Ariel Luckey will perform during the 2011-12 Writers Center Reading Series. Luckey will participate in an all-college presentation weaving poetry, acting, dance, and hip-hop into an exploration of race and culture at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15. in the Advanced Technology Center Auditorium. He also will perform a poetry reading at 7:30 p.m. in the ECC Arts Center, Room VPA 191D.

Dual language program: The window for submitting an interest form for enrolling your future kindergarten student in a dual language program at one of Elgin Area District U-46's elementary schools has just opened. In the past, only Channing Elementary School offered students the program where English-speaking and Spanish-speaking students learn together in a dual language classroom. Students learn to read, understand math facts and the mysteries of science together in two languages. Now, schools that are home to an ELL program have the opportunity to offer two-way dual language to interested families as the numbers allow. For more information on this program please visit the Dual Language section of the ELL website or call Patricia Makishima or Norma Burns at 847-888-5000, ext. 5331. Health clinic: A health clinic will be offered from 3 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8, at Laurel Hill Elementary school, 1750 Laurel Ave, Hanover Park. Elgin Area District U-46 along with the Greater Elgin Clinic will offer physicals and immunizations for a nominal fee.
