Boys golf / Scouting Northwest sectionals
Class 3A Homewood-Flossmoor sectional
Where: Balmoral Woods Country Club, Crete
When: Monday at 8 a.m.
Local competitors: Bobby Nardella and Kyle Acevedo, Leyden. Tim Burchard and Tom Kukec, Maine West.
Outlook: No area teams qualified for the H-F sectional, but the meet at Balmoral will still have a local flavor with Warriors Kukec, a junior, and Burchard, a senior, advancing from the difficult Notre Dame regional at Mission Hills. Also moving on as individuals from the Oak Park-River Forest regional are Leyden sophomore Nardella and junior Acevedo. “He’s a good player,” said Eagles coach Steven Siekierski of Nardella, who also competes in hockey at an elite level.”He’s been our team medalist, or second, in most invitationals this year.” Acevedo excelled at this year’s Fenton Tournament at White Pines with a medal-winning round of 74.
Class 3A Bartlett sectional
Where: Bartlett Hills Golf Course
When: Monday at 8 a.m.
Local teams: Conant
Local individuals: Ryan White and Dan Guido, Elk Grove; Lou Zmich, Schaumburg.
Outlook: The Cougars made history by winning their first-ever regional title at Maple Meadows Golf Course, at the meet that was hosted by Addison Trail. Senior Josh Yoo was outstanding at that tourney with a 76, while classmate Nishil Patel pitched in with a 77. Ben Suchmoski (82) and Zach Piepho (82) also counted scores at Maple Meadows.
The Grenadiers White carded a 75 score the AT regional, only days after finishing one stroke back of medalist honors at the MSL tourney.
Class 3A Fremd sectional
Where: Hilldale Country Club
When: Monday at 9 a.m.
Local teams: Barrington, Prospect, Fremd
Local individuals: Tom Broders and Will Baumgartner, Palatine. Luke DeTrempe, Tim Orlowski and Sam Masini, Saint Viator. Grant Manno, Hersey.
Outlook: It’s almost an embarrassment of riches for the Broncos as any of the top 6 is capable of winning the tournament. Barrington won it’s own hosted regional to advance to Hilldale as Mike Stathakis earned the 2nd place medal by firing a 72. Invitational-winning machine Greg Conrad, only a junior, is one of the state’s best and contributed with a 79 at the regional at Makray Memorial. Fremd’s Zach Isoda lived up to his potential by carding a 79 as the Vikings finished 3rd at Makray to move on, while Steven Rawls continued his late season success. Rawls tied for 1st at the Mid-Suburban League tourney and just fell short of medalist honors in a playoff. Prospect advanced out of the Deerfield region with an outstanding 2nd place finish, just behind Glenbrook North. Seniors Ryan Kowalski and Neil O’Grady (73’s at regionals), Joey Corrado and Josh Johnson are strong players for the Knights.
Broders and Baumgartner survived playoffs at Makray to qualify, while Manno had a 75 at Deerfield.
Ÿ The other sectional tourney will take place at Inwood Golf Course (hosted by Joliet Central) as the teams and individuals hope to qualify for the class 3A state tourney next weekend at the Den at Fox Creek Golf Course in Bloomington.
