College of DuPage Offers Revamped First Responder Training This Spring

Beginning this spring, College of DuPage will offer an updated version of First Responder training through its new Emergency Medical Responder course.

Emergency Medical Responder is designed to meet the growing needs of First Responders community, including volunteers serving on Citizens Emergency Response Teams and Emergency Services Disaster Agency teams, said EMS/Fire Science Manager Dan Krakora.

“This program will better prepare individuals who want to be part of those community teams, and are also considering going into the EMS/Fire profession,” he said. “Participants can get a taste of what EMT training will be like, before committing to the EMT program.”

The three-credit-hour course meets one day per week for three hours and includes instruction in anatomy and basic medical terminology, bandaging/splinting, airway control, patient assessment, basic medical emergencies, trauma emergencies, childbirth, and emergency scene management. The course is geared toward those individuals who are responsible for monitoring safety in the workplace, are part of a local emergency response team, are considering an emergency medical service career, or currently are employed in law enforcement or local government occupations.

Students enrolled in this new course and all Fire Science/EMS courses will receive instruction and training in the new 65,000 Homeland Security Education Center, which features a tower for rappelling and high-angle rescues, a fire room with moveable walls and a full-scale ambulance lab.

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be issued licensure through the Illinois Department of Public Health. Enrollment is limited and early registration is recommended.

Emergency Medical Responder is one of approximately 60 accredited courses of which about 35 are offered every semester. The Fire Science Technology program is widely recognized as one of the top-level fire programs in the state and has an active advisory committee consisting of fire chiefs and other fire service personnel from throughout the state. The College offers an associate's degree in Fire Science Technology as well as the Emergency Medical Technician, Firefighter, Fire Prevention, Fire Officer and Paramedic certificates. In addition, the College recently announced a new 3+1 Fire Service Administration B.A. degree program with Lewis University that starts this fall.
