Delve into local residents’ recollections of Sept. 11

Submitted by McHenry County Historical Society Museum

On Sunday, Sept. 11, the McHenry County Historical Society Museum at 6422 Main St., Union will open free to the public from 1 to 4 p.m. The historical society hopes that visitors will take a few moments while visiting to sit and read the local recollections from Sept. 11, 2001 that area residents wrote.

Each year since 2001 the historical society has provided the public with an opportunity to add their own recollections on information sheets. It is from those personal accounts that future historians and family members will turn to in interpreting that horrific event. Even after 10 years the majority of us remember numerous details of that September morning. The historical society will continue to collect and preserve these very personal accounts.

As in past years, the historical society will be collecting information on individuals and families who are dealing directly with the current wars involving the United States. Short questionnaires for those in military service and those family members on the home front will be available for filling out on Sept. 11 when the museum is open.

For more information on the society, its museum, membership, mission, programs and volunteer opportunities, call (815) 923-2267 or visit mchsonline.org.
