Schaumburg hits it big against Prospect

Visiting Schaumburg (10-5, 4-3) beat Prospect 9-1 in their Mid-Suburban League softball crossover on Tuesday.

The Saxons were led on offense by Becca Thompson (2-for-3, double), Brianne Lingl (3-for-5), Alyssa Lancaster (3-for-5, double, 3 RBI) and Courtney Raschk (2-for-2, 2 walks).

Lancaster (5-4-1) earned the win over Prospect (4-14, 1-7) and pitcher Jill Sadowski (0-2).

Amy Graham (1 run) and Mary Styzek each had 2 hits for the Knights (4-14, 1-7).

“I give a lot of credit to Schaumburg because they made defending us look easy,” said Prospect coach Jim Adair. “And they hit the ball all over the yard. But we are our own worst enemy.”

Conant 13, Rolling Meadows 0 (5 innings): The visiting Cougars outhit the Mustangs 18-3, led by Kim Jacobson (4-for-5, 5 RBI) who homered and had 2 doubles.

Briana Cavin (2-for-4), Allie Bauch (4-for-4, triple, double), Paige Ward (2-for-4) and Sara Pawlik (2-for-2) were other key contributors on offense for Conant (16-1, 7-1).

Cavin threw a 3-hitter with 8 strikeouts to improve to 14-1.

Senior Kelly Keyzer tripled for the Mustangs (11-9, 4-4) while Emily and Grace Skorin each had doubles.

Fremd 10, Hoffman Estates 0 (5 innings): Sophomore Michelle Mazur belted a grand slam and junior Megan Hubbard clubbed a 2-run homer in Fremd’s 6-run first inning.

Other offensive leaders for the visiting Vikes (18-1-1, 7-1) were Allie Gaeding (2-for-4), Megan Horn (2-for-3) and Caitlin Patenaude (3-for-3).

Junior Rachel Doering (9-0) fired a 4-hitter with 4 strikeouts out against the Hawks (5-14-1, 2-5), who received a double from senior Taylor Mann.

Maine West 5, Deerfield 2: The visiting Warriors (10-7, 5-1) won for the seventh time in eight games as sophomore Ariel Valles (9-6) threw a 5-hitter with 5 strikeouts in the CSL North game.

Sophomore Holly Wengerski (3-for-3, 2 runs), sophomore Gina Larucci (3-for-4, double, 2 RBI) and senior Katherine Kusner (2-for-4) led the offense at Deerfield (4-18).

Hersey 11, Wheeling 1 (5 innings): Junior Melissa Cecala (3-for-4, double, 3 RBI), senior Mallory Eichhorn (2-for-4, double) and senior Lindsey Petersen (2-for-3) were the top hitters for host Hersey (4-13, 2-6).

Junior Morgan Palmer (3-3) threw the first 4 innings (6 strikeouts) while Angela Lazzeretti pitched the fifth.

Taylor Schroeder and Sejal Shah each went 2-for-3 for Wheeling (4-9, 0-7) and teammate Sara Kern doubled.

Leyden 15, Willowbrook 1 (5 innings): April Markowski (2-for-2, home run, 3 RBI), Morgan Maize (2-for-4, double, 3 RBI) and Amanda Moran (2-for-2, double, 3 runs) led the offense for Leyden (16-2, 4-1) in the West Suburban Gold.

Maize (15-1) threw a 3-hitter for the win, striking out eight with no walks.

St. Viator 11, St. Joseph 5: St. Viator (8-12, 3-5) scored 11 runs in the final three innings to erase an early 4-0 deficit against visiting St. Joseph.

Senior Julie Sweeney threw a 5-hitter for her eighth win, striking out seven. She also helped the Lions at the plate with 4 hits (3 doubles, 3 RBI).

Catcher Tayler Lenart chipped in defensively by picking off two runners at third base.

The Lions’ big inning came in the fifth when they scored 7 runs on 8 hits.

Jaclyn Koziol (2-for-4) led off the inning with a single. Tayler Lenart (2-for-4, RBI) brought home the first run with a single and Sweeney’s 2-run double tied the game at 4-4.

Following a single by Sam Hogan, Lions senior third baseman Angelica Dickey drove the ball deep off the centerfield wall for a 2-run double.

Gina Mastrodomenico (2-for-3, RBI) collected an RBI single and Kelly O’Brien (2-for-3, 2 RBI) singled home Mastrodomenico. Koziol singled for her second hit of the inning and Tess Kaiser doubled before the inning ended.

“Our seniors along with Alex Flasch (junior) are coming together in the last part of the season as we prepare for the regional playoffs,” said Lions coach Dan Twarog. “They are back from last year’s regional championship team and understand what it takes to win.”
