Fremd wins share of MSL West
Even though Fremd won’t be able to defend its Mid-Suburban League baseball title, it still made history Wednesday.
The Vikings (17-12, 11-5) claimed a share of the MSL West crown with a 7-0 victory at Hoffman Estates (14-17, 6-10) to win three straight division titles for the first time in program history. West co-champion Palatine earned the MSL title game berth with its season sweep of Fremd.
Senior left-hander Sean Stutzman (7-4) threw a complete-game 3-hitter with 10 strikeouts and 2 walks. Josh Jyawook had 2 doubles and Jimmy Latal had 2 hits and a triple as Hoffman committed 4 errors that led to 6 unearned runs.
Hersey 5, Prospect 2: Trevor Haas threw a complete-game 6-hitter and went 2-for-3 with an RBI as Hersey (17-13, 10-6) handed MSL East champion Prospect (20-8, 11-5) its second straight loss.
Haas allowed only 1 earned run and had 4 strikeouts and no walks as he threw 60 of his 90 pitches for strikes. Erik Stoltzner also had 2 RBI for Hersey.
Kurt Donner had the only RBI for Prospect.
Barrington 9, Schaumburg 0: Greg Gerrard threw a 3-hitter for Barrington (7-25, 6-10) in the MSL West victory at Schaumburg (14-10, 7-9). Jake Broughton went 3-for-4 for the Broncos and Ricky Alfonso and Aaron Foley had 2 hits apiece.
Meadows 5, Elk Grove 4: Sophomore Matt Dennis (6-2) went the distance and Rolling Meadows (14-14, 8-8) scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh without getting a ball out of the infield in the MSL East.
Eric Lowe led off the seventh with a walk and moved to third on Joe Kropp’s sacrifice and Kyle Krzeski’s infield single. Matt Hendricks was hit by a pitch and Lowe scored on an 0-2 wild pitch.
Dennis had 4 strikeouts and 2 walks and threw 74 of his 112 pitches for strikes. He also went 2-for-2 with an RBI.
Carl Sugihara (3-for-3), Blake Cavins (2-for-3) and Michael Anciulis (2 doubles) led Elk Grove (16-12, 9-7).
Buffalo Grove 3, Wheeling 2: Dan Recht got his second victory in as many days for Buffalo Grove (15-15, 10-6) in the MSL East. Trevor Myers had a two-out RBI double in the fifth.
Catcher Tommy Ricciardi picked off a Wheeling (5-19, 2-14) runner at third in the fifth and threw out a runner trying to steal second after a leadoff single in the seventh.
St. Viator 10, St. Patrick 7: Winner Robert Romano allowed only 1 run and 2 hits in 4 innings and had 8 strikeouts for St. Viator (18-12, 11-5) in the East Suburban Catholic Conference. Cory Kay homered and Jack Gaffney went 2-for-4 for the Lions.
