Palatine was zeroed in on a comeback in its Mid-Suburban West baseball opener with visiting Barrington on Wednesday.
Alex Miramontes and David Schalla combined to blank the Broncos for the final 7 innings and Vince Portera’s one-out RBI single in the bottom of the 10th gave the Pirates (8-7, 1-0) a dramatic 4-3 victory.
Jesse Bobbit doubled to set up the game-winner for Portera, who also had an RBI single in the fourth. Dan Haze homered to start the Pirates’ comeback from a 3-0 deficit, Kurt Becker went 3-for-5 and Cody Bobbit and Joe Walsh had 2 hits.
Miramontes gave up single runs in each of the first 3 innings but settled down and came out with one out in the eighth. Schalla threw 2 innings of hitless relief.
Sophomores Chris Coco (3-for-4) and Macray Poidomani had RBI singles for Barrington (0-12, 0-1) and Jack Scheffler went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Frank Waliczek had 8 strikeouts in 6 innings and Max Redpath had 4 strikeouts in 3 innings.
Schaumburg 10, Hoffman Estates 1: Kurt Kempema (2-1) pitched 6 strong innings and Schaumburg (7-1, 1-0) won its seventh straight by taking advantage of 5 errors by Hoffman (3-8, 0-1) in the MSL West.
Kempema scattered 6 hits and had 7 strikeouts and no walks. Hoffman loaded the bases with one out in the sixth but third baseman Matt Brancato turned a Trent Rehusch liner into a double play.
Schaumburg broke a 1-1 tie with a 4-run fourth and 3-run fifth. Jordan Grubb had 2 doubles and 3 RBI and Tom Byrne, Dave Geller and Mike Petritis had 2 hits apiece.
Kevin Grudzinski had 2 hits for Hoffman.
Hersey 10, Elk Grove 3: Back-to-back homers in the third inning by Joe Perricone and Sean Thompson got the offense going for Hersey (6-4, 1-0) in the MSL East win.
Thompson also doubled and had 3 RBI and Perricone, who has five homers, drove in 2 runs. Erik Stoltzner was 3-for-4 and Trevor Haas (2-1) didn’t allow a run after the first inning and for the second straight start needed just 69 pitches to go the distance.
Ryan Daubenspeck was 2-for-3 with a 2-run double in the first for Elk Grove (5-6, 0-1).
Prospect 10, Wheeling 3: Jack Landwehr delivered a bases-clearing double in the first inning, and Matt Molini repeated the feat in the second inning to help make a winner of Prospect (9-2, 1-0) in its MSL East opener.
Landwehr started for the Knights, allowing a first-inning solo homer to Josh Matthys but striking out eight with 1 walk through 6 innings in improving to 3-1.
Matthys finished 3-for-3 for Wheeling (3-5, 0-1).
Brad Gerdes went 2-for-4 for the Knights, and Peter Bonahoom doubled.
Fremd 10, Conant 0 (6 inn.): Fremd erupted for 6 runs in the fourth inning, giving starter Sean Stutzman more than enough margin for error as the host Vikings (5-6, 1-0) won their MSL West opener 10-0 in 6 innings over Conant (1-6, 0-1).
Stutzman (3-2) fanned 10 and walked one while tossing a 4-hitter, and he also went 2-for-2 at the plate.
Kurt Kaufman, Zach Kolakowski and Matt Wisniewski had 3 hits apiece for Fremd. Josh Jyawook went 2-for-3 with a double, and KJ Kinsella also had 2 hits in the Vikings’ 17-hit attack.
Leyden 7, Glenbrook South 1: Justin Stawychny hit his fifth homer of the year and went 2-for-3 with 3 RBI and Eric Palmer went 3-for-3 with 3 RBI for Leyden (10-0) in the nonconference win. Angel Sanchez went the distance for the victory.
