Strong MSL starts for Fremd, Buffalo Grove
Fremd and Buffalo Grove did nothing to lose their status as the badminton powers of the Mid-Suburban League.
Conference play opened Tuesday and neither team lost a match as Fremd beat Wheeling 15-0 and BG beat Hoffman Estates 15-0.
Fremd freshman Angela Wu got a strong test at No. 1 singles with a 21-18, 20-22, 21-13 win over Wheeling senior Hannah Park, who qualified for state last year. Annie Huang won at No. 2 singles and Wu and Huang teamed up at No. 1 doubles for a two-set win over Park and Pena.
Buffalo Grove seniors Michelle Byjos and Nell Boyd, who took fourth in state last year, won 21-7, 21-5 over last year’s state qualifying duo of Amruta Bhatt and Maiko Matsubara. Byjos beat Bhatt 21-14, 22-20 at No. 1 singles and Boyd beat Matsubara 21-18, 21-13 at No. 2.
BG’s No. 2 doubles team of Jenny Krewer and Alanna Zawlocki won 21-3, 21-7 over the state-qualifying duo of juniors Auni Bavishi and Meran Liu.
Schaumburg 8, Hersey 7: Schaumburg’s top four singles players — returning state qualifier Sara Partington, Amanda Levin, Roshni Patel and Jessica Hale — won their matches in the MSL crossover.
Adriana Stavreva won at No. 5 singles and No. 2 doubles for Hersey.
Meadows 8, Conant 7: Laura Srnak and Taryn Hampton were winners at the top two singles spots and combined for a three-set win at No. 2 doubles for Rolling Meadows in the MSL crossover.
Conant’s Stephanie Chan and Emily Haney earned a three-set win at No. 1 doubles and they won their singles matches.
