Prospect climbs into MSL East hunt
Prospect’s baseball team is still fighting an uphill battle to get back toward an overall .500 record.
But the Knights have clawed their way back to the top of the Mid-Suburban East race. Sophomore Jordan Fedro and Jack Landwehr combined on a 7-hitter and 6-0 crossover victory at Barrington (15-8, 5-4) on Friday.
Prospect (9-14, 6-3) is tied for the East lead with Hersey and Rolling Meadows as Fedro scattered 6 hits in 5 innings. Landwehr had 2 strikeouts in 2 innings and Nico Witanen, Brad Gerdes, Shane Joyce and Dan Kavanaugh had 2 hits apiece.
Schaumburg 3, Elk Grove 2 (8 inn.): Patrick Bellinger gave himself the relief victory with his two-out RBI single in the bottom of the eighth for Schaumburg (12-11, 4-5) in the MSL crossover. Bellinger allowed 1 hit in 2 innings after a strong start by Matt Brancato. Elk Grove (12-10, 4-5) lost its fifth straight.
Hersey 9, Palatine 1: Trevor Haas threw a 3-hitter as Hersey (16-4, 6-3) scored 8 runs in the first 2 innings of the MSL crossover at Palatine (9-16, 4-5). Haas had 7 strikeouts and no walks as he threw 66 of his 91 pitches for strikes, Sean Reszotko and James Ioratti had 2 hits and 2 RBI each and Nick Nolan went 2-for-4.
Buffalo Grove 5, Hoffman Estates 3: Richie Zirngibl had 3 hits and a 3-run homer in the third which gave BG (9-14, 4-5) a 5-1 lead in the MSL crossover. Zach Anzelmo went 5 innings for the win and Erich Froemming got the save.
Kevin Grudzinski hit a 2-run homer in the fourth and had 2 hits for Hoffman (9-13, 3-6) and Zach Hommowun had 2 hits.
Conant 5, Wheeling 4 (8 inn.): Conant (9-9, 5-4) and Kevin Schimel won the MSL crossover with a run in the bottom of the eighth after taking a 4-0 lead in the first. Wheeling (1-21, 0-9) tied it with a 2-run seventh.
