Schaumburg’s Bellinger says no-no to Mather
This time Patrick Bellinger didn’t have to worry about allowing no hits and coming away with a no decision for Schaumburg.
The Evansville-bound senior right-hander fired a no-hitter for the Saxons (5-3) in the first of two 16-0 wins in 5 innings over visiting Mather in Saturday’s nonconference doubleheader. In his first start, Bellinger pitched eight no-hit innings and came out of a scoreless game Cary-Grove won in nine innings.
Winner Kevin Sola nearly matched Bellinger in the second game as Mather managed only 1 hit. Jeremy Hall had 2 triples for the Saxons.
Fremd 9, Notre Dame 1: The host Fremd Vikings collected a dozen hits and played errorless ball behind starter Lee Breitzman and cruised to a 9-1 nonconference victory over Notre Dame.
Keith Browning led the hit parade for the Vikings (5-2) with 3 hits, while Josh Jyawook had a couple singles, 3 RBI and 2 stolen bases. Keith Giagnorio had a double and a single, Connor Bieda doubled and Bobby McDonald chipped in with a pair of singles.
Breitzman went the distance, scattering 6 hits with 3 strikeouts and 1 walk. He threw only 69 pitches (46 strikes) as the Vikings won their fifth straight game.
Rolling Meadows 11, Streamwood 1 (5 inn.): Rolling Meadows (3-3) finally got a chance to relax after five 1-run games as Matt Hendricks just missed hitting for the cycle and drove in 5 runs and Matt Dennis threw only 63 pitches in the five-inning nonconference win.
Hendricks was 3-for-4 with a double and triple. Garrett Peterson (2-for-4) and John Burkiewicz also tripled, Eric Lowe went 3-for-4 and Mike Dolan went 2-for-3.
Dennis threw a 4-hitter with 6 strikeouts and no walks as 45 of his pitches were strikes. The first-inning run allowed by the junior was unearned.
St. Viator splits: Enjoying some California sunshine, the St. Viator Lions lost their first game before rebounding in Game 2 with a timely rally.
The Lions (5-3), who are spending spring break playing five games in Anaheim, Calif., scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning to earn a 4-3 victory over Mission Viejo, Calif.
With the Lions trailing 3-2, Kevin Patzke delivered a clutch single that drove home a pair of runs.
The beneficiary was starter Chris Myjak, who went the distance for the victory, scattering 3 hits with 5 strikeouts. Myjak helped his own cause by going 3-for-3 with a double, 2 RBI and a run scored.
Roy Pettingill had a double and a single and scored 2 runs.
In their first game, the Lions dropped a 3-1 decision to El Toro, Calif. Tim McElroy (2-1) pitched 5-plus innings and allowed 6 hits and 3 runs, 2 earned.
Brian Wilhite was 3-for-3, including a double. Patzke and Joe Rossi each added a pair of hits.
The Lions, who play three more games before returning home, turned 5 double plays in the two games and did not commit an error in either contest.
Hersey 3, Evanston 0: Senior Mike Danielak fired a 1-hitter as Hersey (5-0) returned home from its three-game trip to central Illinois with a nonconference victory.
Hoffman Estates, Larkin split: Sophomore Ethan Bloom homered and Jimmy Ward got the victory as Hoffman (5-5) rallied for a 2-1 victory in the first game of a doubleheader. Larkin salvaged a split with a 4-1 victory.
Leyden splits with Downers South: Brennen Chillemi went 3-for-3 with a double and 3 RBI, lifting Leyden to a 3-0 victory over Downers Grove South in the first game of a season-ending West Suburban Gold doubleheader.
Angel Sanchez (3-0) went the distance, allowing just 2 hits with 7 strikeouts and no walks. Dan Schoedel also doubled for the defending WSC Gold champion Eagles.
In the nightcap, Downers South handed Leyden (7-1) its first loss of the spring with a 6-0 decision.
Dundee-Crown 2, Elk Grove 1: Joe Piscopo went 2-for-3 and drove in the Elk Grove (5-3) run in the third inning of the nonconference loss. Michael Woods allowed 1 earned run with 4 strikeouts and 3 walks in 6 1-3 innings for the Grenadiers.
Glenbard North 2, Conant 1 (8 inn.): Nick Blaha took the tough loss for Conant (4-2) as Glenbard North tied it in the bottom of the seventh and won the nonconference game an inning later.
