ECC bands, vocal groups’ performances fill December calendar

Elgin Community College bands and vocal ensembles offer something for everyone during December. Performances will be held in the Building H Arts Center, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin.

The ECC Steel Bands, under the direction of Steve Butters, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5. There will be music by Adele, Frank Zappa, Phish, as well as calypso versions of “Ode to Joy” and “Once in Royal David’s City” in addition to other selections.

The ECC Vocal Jazz Ensemble will perform “Cool Jazz” at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 9. The ensemble, under the direction of John G. Slawson, will feature a number of jazz works including “September Song” arranged by Phil Mattson, “Ain’t That a Kick in the Head”, “Africa” arrange by Philip Lawson, and “Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/The End” by John Lennon/Paul McCartney and arranged by ensemble member, David DeVries. Once again the vocal ensemble will be accompanied by the jazz trio of Reid Spears on piano, Ben Dillinger on bass, and Andy Soderstrom on drums.

The ECC Jazz Ensembles will present “Winter Taste of Jazz” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 12. The ensembles, under the direction of Mark Bettcher, will perform selections from the Duke Ellington library and a wide variety of jazz styles from swing to Latin and contemporary. The guest will be the Grammy Award-winner harmonica artist Howard Levy.
