Lake Co. YMCA swimmers shine on “Super Sunday”

The Lake County Family YMCA swim teams again met up this weekend at the Blue Marlins Super Sunday Pentathlon VII at the Buehler Y in Palatine. The Central Lake YMCA Turtles Swim Team placed 5th and the Northern Lake YMCA Seahorse Swim Team placed 6th. In all, nine teams completed in this day-long event that in many ways is a preview of the district championships to be held in March.

Leading the way for each team were several swimmers who had high cumulative times at the meet. In addition to team and individual point totals, age-group swimmers were judged for the best overall final time of all five events (freestyle, breaststroke, butterfly, backstroke, and individual medley). Top finishers for the Turtles included: Hannah Yan, 2nd place, Girls 12-year olds; Aijan Sovetova, 4th place, Girls 14-year olds; and Emma Zhang, 5th place, Girls 8-year olds. Placing for the Seahorses were: Katy Flesher, 4th place, Girls 11-year olds; Reece Wiatrowski, 5th place, Boys 7-year olds; and Vaughan Spratt-Szarzynski, 5rd place, Girls 9-year olds.

“We brought a small group of only 15 swimmers, but they all shined,” Seahorse Head Coach Mike Hewitt said. “Everyone posted season best times and the kids got a taste of where they stand against other district swimmers.”

“This meet was a great meet for all our swimmers,” according to Turtles Head Coach Maureen Rancourt. “The last few weeks after the holidays have been hard for many of our swimmers. It was great to see everyone improving times and achieving their individual goals.”

Next up for the Seahorses is a home meet Saturday, Feb. 4, at 9 a.m. at Waukegan High School against Lattof YMCA of Des Plaines. The Turtles will face the PAV YMCA Posidians at 1 p.m. at the Northern Lake Y in Waukegan.
