Two suburban wrestlers earn Big Ten honors

Two former suburban wrestling stars earned Big Ten honors for their efforts last week.

Illinois senior Eric Terrazas of Wheaton was named the Big Ten Co-Wrestler of the Week along with Iowa sophomore Tony Ramos of Carol Stream.

Terrazas (149 pounds) helped to lead the Fighting Illini to a 3-0 record for the week as he picked up victories over two top-10 opponents in No. 7 Ivan Lopouchanski of Purdue and No. 4 Eric Grajales of Michigan. Then ranked 14th in the nation at his weight, Terrazas recorded one technical fall and two decisions, scoring 11 points for the Illini during three dual meets. The Wheaton North grad recorded his first decision against Lopouchanski on Friday night with a dominant 10-4 victory. He followed with two victories, a 16-1 technical fall over Lock Haven’s Owen Wilkinson and a 6-3 decision against Grajales.

Ramos, who was ranked No. 2 at 133 pounds, also had a big week, earning a second-period pin at Indiana on Friday and topping defending NCAA champion and top-ranked Jordan Oliver of Oklahoma State on Saturday with a 4-3 overtime victory.

Ramos, now ranked No. 1 in the country by Amateur Wrestling News, owns a 17-1 record this season with four major decisions, four pins and five technical falls.
