Summer camp registration underway at Lake Co. YMCA
Even though it's winter, now is the perfect time for parents to plan an enriching summertime experience for their children. Registration for Lake County Family YMCA's summer youth camps is under way.
From swimming to craft projects and outdoor education, ACA-accredited Y Day Camps offer a variety of fun and educational activities under the supervision of counsellors certified in first aid, CPR and AED.
Campers will build self-confidence, discover new skills, develop a respect for the outdoors and make new friends. They are divided into two age groups: grades K-4 and grades 5-8.
The younger group will have fun in a safe environment in which they can learn practical and social skills and develop positive values while participating in a variety of activities. The focus for the older group is on community awareness and career exploration through service projects, leadership initiatives and social development. The service projects will include Northern Illinois Food Bank, Winchester House and developing a community garden from which produce will be donated to a local food pantry.
One-week camps for both age groups are offered throughout the summer at Central Lake YMCA, 700 Lakeview Parkway, Vernon Hills, and Northern Lake YMCA, 2000 Western Ave., Waukegan. The hours are 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday – Friday. Weekly themes and field trips allow children to make new discoveries and explore activities such as sports, the arts and science.
There's also a preschool summer camp experience available for kids 3 to 5 years old at the Central Lake Y only. These young campers will participate in games, songs, crafts, and several field activities in addition to swimming one day each week.
Registration for all age groups can be done on either a weekly or an all-summer basis. Camps dates cover the period June 11 through Aug. 24.
The summer day camps, like all Lake County Family YMCA programs, are designed to encourage the four core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
Space is limited, so parents should register their children early. Members of the Y receive discounted rates. For more information and registration details, visit www.ymcalakecounty.org or the Welcome Center at either Central Lake YMCA or Northern Lake YMCA.
