Rodriguez, Buffalo Grove keep rolling
Buffalo Grove keeps winning, and Ian Rodriguez keeps breaking records.
The Bison pulled out a 1-point win Saturday in the college events meet hosted by Vernon Hills, and Rodriguez established a meet and school record in the 200-yard freestyle, winning in 1:45.49. The previous night he’d established pool records in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke in a dual meet victory against Palatine.
The Buffalo Grove senior also won the 200 backstroke (1:59.79) and had legs on the winning 400 medley and and third-place 800 free relays at Vernon Hills.
Buffalo Grove finished at 111 points, 1 better than Glenbrook North. Libertyville was third at 107.
Matt Schulstad was a winner for the Bison in the 200 breaststroke (2:22.83) and placed second in the 200 fly (2:05.93); Jon Mass was second in the 50 free (22.78).
Libertyville’s winners were Atticus Rush in the 1,000 free, Matt Harrington in the 50 free and Alex Snarski in the 200 fly. The Wildcats also had the top 800 free relay, where Matt King, Pat King, Tommy Keefe and Harrington won in 7:34.51.
Vernon Hills’ Alex Zuniga won diving at 408.30, and BG’s Julian Vasquez was second (317.15).
Elk Grove Invitational: Cary-Grove had a double individual winner in Michael Hamann and won all three relays on its way to winning the flighted invitational hosted by the Grenadiers.
Cary-Grove finished with 453 points, ahead of Highland Park (405), Hoffman Estates (386), and Elk Grove (330) in the seven-team field.
Hoffman Estates’s Nick Jessee produced the best efforts in the 200 free (1:48.28) and 100 free (49.73); the Hawks’ Sang W. Han won the 100 breaststroke and finished second in the 50 free (22.91).
Hinsdale South Invitational: Barrington junior Jack Strauss won the 50 (22.53) and 100 (48.45) freestyles to help the Broncos finish third in the college events invitational in Darien.
Other top-three individual finishers for Barrington included Nolan Presmyk in diving (second, 344.65), Kyle Ujiye in the 200 fly (2:04.54) and Chris Vega in the 500 free (5:09.48), and the 200 free relay of Ujiye, Tommy Clement, James Rodney and Strauss won in 1:30.13.
Naperville Central (240 points) won the meet, followed by Hindale Central (221) and the Broncos (206).
Fremd placed 10th and got a third-place finish from Andrew King in the 100 free (50.79).
