Cary-Grove’s Loeffel state high jump champ
CHARLESTON — The potential has always been there for Carly Loeffel, and the Cary-Grove senior put it together at the right time in securing a Class 3A state title in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 8 inches Saturday at Eastern Illinois O’Brien Stadium.
Loeffel was clearing 5-5 before she even reached high school, and as a freshman she cleared 5-6.
Loeffel took it up a notch clearing 5-8 as a sophomore and expectations were on the rise.
But injuries, including a stress fracture her sophomore season, derailed her title hopes.
Loeffel finished fifth in Class 3A last season, but the she wanted more and on Saturday she delivered, becoming the first Cary-Grove athlete to win a state title in girls track.
“It’s been on my mind since the end of last year,” said Loeffel who cleared 5-4 last year at state. “I knew I could definitely go a lot higher and I put in the work.”
Loeffel cleared 5-7 four times this season but waited to the end to tie her school record that she set early her sophomore year at the Buffalo Grove invite.
“Ever since we first met we knew she had the potential to be a state champion,” said Cary-Grove coach Mark Anderson of his senior star. “She has the work ethic and she has been coming on strong since the conference meet.”
The Notre Dame-bound senior title may have been delayed a bit, but the wait is over.
“I’d rather have it now than any other time,” said Loeffel.
