Prospect outlasts Highland Park
Enjoying one of the finest matches of her career, Prospect 6-foot-2 senior middle hitter Carly Thompson put down 14 kills to help lead Prospect to a 25-22, 18-25, 25-11 victory over Highland Park in the Giants’ own Class AA regional play-in match on Monday night.
The Knights (13-22) will meet No. 1 seed Lake Zurich (31-4) today at 6 p.m. in the semifinals.
No. 8 St. Viator (17-15) and No. 9 Barrington (19-16) play in the second semifinal at 7 p.m.
“We will have to bring our ‘A’ game for sure,” said Knights coach Mike Riedy about today’s match with Lake Zurich.
Thompson had her ‘A’ game on Monday, producing a .435 hitting efficiency.
“She had a great match,” Riedy said. “She was all over the place.”
Knights senior Josie Sajbel put down 10 kills while classmate Allie Skowron had 8 kills and 4 blocks.
Sophomore Nikki Matters (21-of-22) served 95 percent for the Knights with a pair of aces while junior Sarah Cutaia came up with 25 digs.
Sophomore Michelle Haaning directed the offense with 35 assists from 85 sets.
“That was a great match for Michelle,” Riedy added.
Elk Grove d. Addison Trail: No. 12 Elk Grove won its play-in match of the Class AA Addison Trail regional with a 25-17, 25-9 triumph over No. 21 Elgin.
EG (16-17) faces No. 5 Batavia today at 7 p.m. in the semifinals
The Grens were led on attack by Amber Lindfors (9-of-11, 7 kills, 2 blocks) and Melissa Solorio (6-of-6, 3 kills) while setter Kerry Souder (26-of-26) handed out 10 assists.
Kelly Regan had 7 digs and Celina Wlodarski (9-of-9, 2 aces), Taylor Brown (6-of-7, 2 aces) and Becca Maher (5-of-5, 1 ace) were top servers.
Rolling Meadows d. Waukegan: No. 12 Rolling Meadows posted a 25-5 25-3 victory over the Class AA Waukegan play-in match over the host and No. 22-seeded Bulldogs.
Meadows (21-15) faces No. 5 Glenbrook North in today’s 7 p.m. semifinal.
Grace Skorin (16-of-16, 5 aces), Jenny Vliet (6-of-6, 2 aces), Lauren Sokolowski (12-of-13, 4 aces), Mia Harper (8-of-8, 2 aces) and Sami Kay (6-of-6) were top servers for the Mustangs.
Vliet also led the winners with 7 kills while Ashley Montanez had 4. Hannah Mickey had 4 blocks.
Kay handed out 9 assists and Vliet 3.
Mundelein d, Wheeling; No. 13 Mundelein topped the No. 20 Wildcats 25-15 25-21 in the Clas AA regional play-in game.
Leading the Wildcats (7-29) on attack were Lani Greenberg (4 kills), Haley Singer (3) and Deanna Kuzmanic (3). Alexa Laureano had 14 digs while Sabrina Semeria and Caitlyn Slussar had 7 apiece.
Lake Forest d Hoffman Estates: No. 15 Lake Forest stopped No. 17 Hoffman Estates 25-18, 25-16 at the Class AA Carmel regional play-in.
The Hawks (7-27) were led by Sarah Wille (5 kills) and Andrea Wolanski (4) while Kaitlyn Imburgia handed out 9 assists. Clare Shaffer and Isabella Zach each had 8 digs.
