Rogowski hits milestone in Hersey win

Junior Megan Rogowski became only the second Hersey girls basketball player to surpass 1,500 career points and senior Maddie Swan fired home a career-high 24 points as Hersey (22-7) stopped host Barrington 60-53 in the Mid-Suburban League second-place crossover game on Tuesday night.

Rogowski is only 16 points shy of Corrine Vossel's school record of 1,523 points.

Hersey senior Kathryn Korff had a big night on the boards, grabbing 19 rebounds with her 13 points while Julia Fredian collected 7 points and 7 assists.

"Their interior kids played real well," said Barrington coach Babbi Barreiro, whose club (16-12) was led by junior Abby Kirchoff's game-high 26 points. "We struggled inside and did not rebound well."

Sarah Mass had 4 assists for the Fillies while Kirchoff had 3 steals and Emily Harris 4 rebounds and 10 points.

"Abby had a really good effort," Barreiro said. "She looked good with the basketball and put a lot of points on the boards."

Hersey's 42 points in the second half gave the Huskies 143 points in two days. They won 83-55 on Monday over Oak Park in Bensenville.

"We're happy to come away with the two wins," said Huskies coach Mary Fendley. "We put a lot of points up and a lot of mileage on our bus."

Hoffman Estates 49, Elk Grove 42: Making her second start, Hoffman freshman Destinee Young scored 13 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in what coach Mike Nocella called her best game of the season.

Kelsey Lukowicz added 10 points and Megan Bernardoni had 9 points with 4 steals for the Hawks (20-7).

Still playing without 6-foot-4 Courtney Lindfors (foot), Elk Grove (21-6) was led by senior Ashley Capotosto (18 points) and junior Maggie Fries (13).

Rolling Meadows 36, Palatine 33: Rolling Meadows senior Kelly Adair said her Mustangs girls basketball team has been playing well, but hasn't been able to finish all that well.

The visiting Mustangs got the latter part right and posted a victory on the Pirates' senior night.

After Katie Scovic's big 3-pointer brought Palatine to within 34-33 with 46.5 seconds left in the game, junior Madelynn Conlin hit 2 free throws with 44.3 seconds left to extend the lead to 36-33.

After the Pirates missed a 3-pointer with under 30 seconds left, they got the rebound but Conlin swept in for a steal and helped preserve the win for Meadows (12-17).

"She's (Conlin) been a fiery thing for us all season," said Mustangs coach Todd Hatfield. "Despite her size (5-foot-6) she's not afraid to mix it up."

"We limited our mistakes down the stretch and our intensity was great," said Adair, who added 7 points and a 3-pointer.

Freshman Morgan Keller led the Mustangs with 14 points, including their first 8 of the game for an 8-3 lead.

"It's amazing that Morgan goes from not even being on the radar at the start of the season to becoming one of our go-to girls," Hatfield added. "It's great to have her on the floor. And the best thing is, she's a freshman."

Junior Ashley Rio chipped in 6 points, including 4 big ones in the final three minutes.

A layup by Adair gave Meadows a 14-3 after one quarter but Palatine (10-17) rallied and got to within 19-16 at the break, thanks to a 3-pointer from Katie Mnichowicz with five seconds left.

"That's the story of our season," said Palatine coach Leslie Schock. "We've had a really hard time starting the first quarter with any mental focus."

Seniors Brittany Walls, Katie Narwot, Heather Zimmerman, Kelli Burke and Sydney Wiedeman were honored before the game.

Zimmerman led the Pirates with 9 points.

"I thought Heather had a nice game for her final one on her home court," Schock said. "She played real aggressively. For being out for a long time with mono, it can be real tough to come back strong right away and she has just really gutted it out."

Zimmerman's 3-pointer with 5:10 left in the game put Palatine ahead 30-26 before Meadows closed with a 10-3 run.

"The word of the day was 'dig deep,' " Hatfield said "(Today) is our senior night (against Downers Grove North at 7:30 p.m.), so we hope we can get everyone on board to send them out on a proper note with a W."

Prospect 44, Schaumburg 41: Juniors Sarah Hunt collected 15 points and Sarah Winans added 10 for the Knights (18-8).

"Sarah did a good job on the boards, too," said Prospect coach Martha Kelly. "Overall, the team did a nice job looking for the open player. The girls attacked the basket and looked for kicks."

Rachel Kahan (11 points), Alyssa Saklak (9) and Taylor Kosla (9) led Schaumburg (6-22).

Buffalo Grove 45, Conant 35: Andrea DiPrima (13 points) and Stacey Lialios (12) led the Bison (9-20), who host York on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m.

DiPrima scored 12 points in the first quarter, including a pair of 3-pointers.

"Our post players had a tremendous game," said BG coach Pat Dudle. "Stacey Lialios and Michelle Jackson (6 points) had some clutch baskets in the fourth quarter."

Ashley Lindeman, Kelly Lomas and Alyssa Rawleigh each scored 8 points to lead Conant (7-20).
