Elgin youth symphony welcomes prospective members to open house

The Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra will hold its annual open house for prospective musicians on Sunday, March 4. The open house, which will occur in conjunction with the EYSO Sunday rehearsals, will allow visitors the opportunity to become acquainted with the rehearsal experience.

The open house will be from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Elgin Community College Arts Center, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin.

Visitors to the open house will be able to explore the many opportunities available through EYSO participation. Meet current students and parents to learn about their experiences. Current parents, students, staff and conductors will be present to answer questions. In addition, visitors may stop by a rehearsal, learn about 2012-13 audition dates and requirements, and enjoy free giveaways and the opportunity to be entered into a drawing for a grand prize.

Many alumni who have gone on to study at internationally recognized institutions and have successful music careers. Concert programs are created around a central theme. The EYSO has Honors Chamber Ensembles: Maud Powell String Quartet, Sterling Brass Quintet, and the Hanson String Quartet Brass Choir Chamber Music Institute. It also features individualized coaching and featured concerts master classes with Midori, Yo-Yo Ma and other internationally recognized artists.

Auditions will be held from May 30 to June 3. Students who will begin fourth grade in the fall to college students may audition for a seat in one of the six ensembles. After March 1, applications and audition requirements may be found at eyso.org, or by calling the EYSO office at (847) 841-7700.

The EYSO is committed to making participation accessible to any qualified student regardless of financial need. Students have opportunities each year to earn part or all of their EYSO tuition. Since the EYSO is an In-Residence Ensemble at the Elgin Community College Arts Center, EYSO members who are 16 years of age at the beginning of a concert cycle are eligible to earn college credit while playing in the EYSO.

Current EYSO students are residents of the following communities: Algonquin, Arlington Heights, Aurora, Barrington, Bartlett, Batavia, Bridgeview, Burlington, Campton Hills, Carol Stream, Carpentersville, Cary, Chicago, Crystal Lake, DeKalb, Downers Grove, East Dundee, Elburn, Elgin, Elmhurst, Frankfort, Geneva, Genoa, Gilberts, Glen Ellyn, Glendale Heights, Grayslake, Hampshire, Hoffman Estates, Huntley, Inverness, Itasca, La Fox, Lake Geneva (Wis.), Lake Zurich, Libertyville, Lisle, Lombard, Minooka, Montgomery, Mt. Prospect, Naperville, North Aurora, Oswego, Pingree Grove, Richmond, Roselle, St. Charles, Schaumburg, Sheridan, Sleepy Hollow, South Barrington, South Elgin, Streamwood, Sugar Grove, Sycamore, Warrenville, Wayne, West Chicago, West Dundee, Wheaton, Winfield and Yorkville.

EYSO conductors are dedicated to helping young musicians appreciate and enjoy music while helping them understand the rich history of music around the world.
