Volunteers, donations are welcome for Heritage Fair

Have a donation for a white-elephant sale? Or a pre-1970 item in good, undamaged condition that you would be willing to auction off for a good cause? Do you want to try your hand at a Pie Bake-Off? The McHenry County Historical Society's 33rd annual Heritage Fair will be Sunday, July 8.

They are seeking donations for its popular "White Elephant" sale, a much-anticipated and pivotal part of the McHenry County Historical Society's fundraising effort. Items range from vintage clothing, garden tools, furniture, new and vintage books, glassware, seasonal merchandise, games, sporting equipment, mint-condition slide projectors and tables of odds and ends you'll not find anywhere else.

This year's sale runs from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sunday, July 8, in the Schuette Building, next door to the museum. No early birds. Checks and cash only.

Donations may be dropped off at the historical society museum, 6422 Main St., during regular business hours - 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. No broken or soiled items, or items that have been recalled or contain hazardous materials will be accepted. Just about any clean, resealable item is welcome - with a few exceptions: large appliances, antiquated computers and electronic items, VHS tapes, medical supplies, clothing, and child items such as cribs, car seats and used stuffed animals will not be accepted. The Society also reserves the right to reject items because of duplication, condition or disposal costs.

For information, call (815) 923-2267.

Bakers also are needed. This year's contest features three categories: Fruit, berry and mixed fruit/other. No cream pies, please. Also, while multiple entries are appreciated for resale, only one pie per category is eligible to be judged.

Interested bakers can register their pies between 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. the day of the Heritage Fair in the West Harmony School, on the museum grounds. The entry fee is $2. Judging will take place at 10:30 a.m. with ribbons awarded to the winners in each category, plus a special award for the grand champion. Last year's grand champion is ineligible for prizes this year and will, instead, serve as a judge.

Pies will be sold by the slice immediately following the judging at the Heritage Fair's bake sale with the exception of the grand prize winning pie which will be auctioned off. All proceeds from the pie-baking contest will benefit the McHenry County Historical Society. For information, call (815) 923-2267 or email info@mchenrycountyhistory.org.

Do you have a pre-1970 item in good, undamaged condition that you would be willing to donate to a good cause?

If so, you have the perfect item for the antique auction at the McHenry County Historical Society's Heritage Fair on July 8. Donated antique items could include original art, quilts, vintage toys, stained glass lamps, advertising and sports collectibles, and art pottery. We are not seeking furniture this year and please avoid sets of china.

Why not sort through your favorite collection for a duplicate piece to donate? Your auction donation may be eligible for a tax deduction. Funds raised by this annual event are used to operate an award-winning countywide historical museum, provide student and adult educational programs, and encourage countywide efforts at historical preservation. To donate antiques and collectibles by July 3, call the historical society at (815) 923-2267 or email photos to info@mchenrycountyhistory.org.
