Algonquin library to hold Mini Comic Con
From 501st Stormtroopers to Superhero Crafts, the Algonquin Area Public Library Mini Comic Con has something for everyone.
Saturday, May 2, is Free Comic Book Day, where libraries and comic shops around the nation give away free comic books.
To celebrate, the Algonquin Area Public Library is hosting a Mini Comic Con at the Harnish Main Library. The day's schedule includes: all-day free comic books, one per person, at Harnish Main Library and Eastgate Branch Library; Stormtroopers visit from 10 a.m. to noon, a photo opportunity; Children's Costume Contest is from 10:30 to 11 a.m., kids can dress as their favorite superhero, cartoon character, or book/movie character, and a panel of library staff will select the favorites, prizes will be awarded for different age groups and categories; Superhero Crafts for Kids is from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. where Kids can create their own superhero mask and make a fun Star Wars light saber; Adult/Young Adult Costume Contest is from 11 to 11:30 a.m. Come dressed up as your favorite comic book, manga, anime, fantasy, or science fiction character, and library staff will select the favorite and award a prize; Comic Book/Book Swap is from noon to 4 p.m. Bring in 10 of your own unwanted or gently used comics and pick out up to 10 others to add to your collection.
There also will be random drawings all day, from the monthlong comic/graphic novel Facebook trivia contest players to the collection of completed FCBD passports turned in by May 2. The winner of the library's Comic/Graphic Novel Persuasive Essay Contest also will be announced.
The library thanks Modern Age Comics, with locations in Crystal Lake and Algonquin, for their partnership in this event.
