Learn how to restore landscapes with native plants Sept. 6

Learn the tips and tricks of returning our local wilderness areas to their former beauty and function through "Restoring Vegetation," part of McHenry County Conservation District's People and Nature Program, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, at Lost Valley Visitor Center in Glacial Park, Route 31 and Harts Road, Ringwood.

Ecological restoration often begins with landscapes that have lost much of their native flora and fauna, and for this reason reintroduction of native plants is a necessary part of the restoration process.

This workshop will include the selection of plant species appropriate for each ecosystem type, the relative benefits of seeding versus planting, site preparation methods, and seed collection and processing techniques.

Most of the class will be outdoors; dress for the weather and bring a sack lunch and something to drink.

"Restoring Vegetation" is part of McHenry County Conservation District's People and Nature Programs and is one of the workshops required for earning an Ecological Restoration Certificate.

The programs are designed to serve the homeowner, volunteer steward, nature educator, or lover of the outdoors, and cover topics on ecological restoration and landscaping with nature.

Program is designed for adults and interested students 14 years and older. Registration deadline is Tuesday, Sept. 2.

Cost is $40 for county residents and $45 for nonresidents. Register online at MCCDistrict.org; drop off registration at Glacial Park Lost Valley Visitor Center, Route 31 and Harts Road, Ringwood; or drop off or mail in to Prairieview Education Center, 2112 Behan Road, Crystal Lake.
