Briefs: Man arrested for robbery
DuPage County sheriff's deputies arrested a homeless man, David Anthony Mason, 24, at the Wheaton train station late Thursday on charges of aggravated robbery of the Mobil gas station at 22W070 Butterfield Road near Glen Ellyn. Police said a masked man with a handgun entered the station about 10 a.m. Nov. 30 and ordered the clerk to give him money from the register. The man took about $300 and ordered the clerk to the floor. The clerk was not injured and the robber fled. Mason has been charged with one count of aggravated robbery and is in DuPage County jail on a $300,000 bond. His next court date is at 1:30 p.m. Jan. 5.
Police make seat-belt arrests
Wheaton police conducted a program from Nov. 14 through Nov. 30 targeting seat-belt use and child-restraint laws. The campaign resulted in 245 citations for failure to wear a seat belt; three citations for child-restraint violations; one misdemeanor arrest; and two citations for no insurance.
Pops concert in Wheaton
The Wheaton Warrenville South High School band program presents a Holiday Pops Concert at 7 p.m. today, Dec. 6. Audience members are asked to bring a new, unwrapped toy suitable for children up to age 16 for donation to the Wheaton Warrenville Christmas Sharing project that assists more than 700 area families. Help with phone bills
The Citizens Utility Board is holding a free "phone-bill clinic" at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, to inform Wheaton consumers about ways to cut their calling costs by potentially hundreds of dollars - including how to get a CUB-negotiated $20 long-distance credit. The clinic is at the Wheaton Public Library, 225 N. Cross St. Space is limited and tickets for the free event are available at the library's adult checkout desk or by calling (630) 868-7516.
Service families get in touch
Area families who have service personnel in Iraq can get in touch with them during the holidays. Benedictine University in Lisle is partnering with Freedom Calls Foundation to offer free, half-hour video conferences to families with loved ones stationed at one of five camps in Iraq. The conferences are available through Dec. 19 at facilities in the Joseph and Bess Kindlon Hall of Learning on the Benedictine campus, 5700 College Road, Lisle. Choral concert in Wheaton
Wheaton Warrenville South High School's music department will present its Holiday Choral Concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 8, at College Church, Washington and Seminary streets, Wheaton. The concert features the men's chorale, JV and varsity women's chorale, concert choir and chamber singers. The concert is free but a freewill offering will be taken.
