Falcons spark homecoming fireworks

It was a week filled with dancing, outrageous outfits, athletic rivalry, reunions, charity and even some fireworks.

The students at Wheaton North High School in Wheaton celebrated spirit week Sept. 23-28 with dress-up theme days including Cubs or Sox day, twin day and Willy Wonka day, in honor of the school's "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" homecoming theme.

Before the official homecoming dance, the school also hosted its Falcon Fiesta and dance, a casual event that included carnival-style games and DJ tunes. Approximately 1,000 students attended.

"The adults who put on the events are exhausted with two dances in one week, but the kids love that (Falcon Fiesta) because there is no pressure or dressing up," said activities director Kevin Williams. "It's just them and their friends dancing."

For admission to the fiesta, students brought canned goods that were donated to the Northern Illinois Food Bank.

At the end of the week, Wheaton North faced off against the West Aurora Blackhawks, with the Falcons winning 38-27. And while the game included traditional performances by the cheerleading squad, marching band and pompon team, Wheaton North also celebrated halftime in style with a fireworks display.
