McHenry County College notes

McHenry County College will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with several events for the public. Hispanic Heritage Month is a national observance that traditionally runs from Sept. 15 through Oct. 15. The events are free and open to the public. The events are co-sponsored by Student Life and Latinos Unidos club.

These activities are planned:

• Thursday, Sept. 11, Brazilian Folk Art Workshop, Gregory Beyer, 4-5:15 p.m., Conference Center. This workshop will feature the origins and history of the Berimbau and the development of traditional Brazilian folk art.

• Friday, Sept. 12, Make a Difference Day, Field of Flags,

1-4 p.m., Multicultural Center, A254. Join students who will display facts and statistics on the campus lawn along Route 14 in an effort to raise awareness about a variety of issues, including those affecting the Hispanic community.

• Tuesday, Sept. 23, Register to Vote Finale, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.,

MCC Commons area, Building B. Students and members of the community can register to vote.

• Monday, Sept. 29, Beginning Portuguese Language Lesson,

1:15-2:30 p.m., MCC, Room B168-169. Space is limited to 20 participants. To register, call (815) 455-8550. Students and members of the community are invited to learn the excitement of the Portuguese language and the richness of its culture.

• Tuesday, Oct. 7, Taste of Spain: Demo and Tasting, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Employee Staff Dining Room, B177C. Space is limited to 70 participants. To register, call (815) 455-8550. Michael Maddox, chef of Le Titi de Paris in Arlington Heights, will demonstrate how to cook a variety of foods with a Spanish influence and participants will have an opportunity to taste the creations.

• Monday, Oct. 13, Open Community Forum, 5-7 p.m., Employee Dining Room, B177C. Several community members will discuss issues of community importance, such as education, health care, acculturation, and more.
