Briefs: No injuries in house fire

Oak Brook firefighters are investigating the cause of a fire that caused $50,000 damage to a house. The blaze began about 9 p.m. Tuesday on Kingston Drive in the Brook Forest subdivision. A man walking his dog noticed smoke coming from the home and alerted authorities. The residents were not home at the time of the fire. No one was injured.

Agencies benefit from walk

Almost $7,500 was distributed this month to seven DuPage County social service agencies: the food pantry at the Christian Church of Villa Park; Public Action to Deliver Shelter, or PADS, at Peace Lutheran Church of Lombard; the Addison Community Switchboard; PADS at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Villa Park; the Lombard/Villa Park Food Pantry; PADS at First Church of Lombard United Church of Christ; Outreach House. Funds were raised during last October's CROP Hunger Walk, an annual event that benefits worldwide hunger-fighting efforts of Church World Service ministries. Last year's local walk raised about $22,500. Any social service agencies wishing to submit applications for funds from the 2008 CROP Hunger Walk can call Lew Mantels at (630) 290-1191 for an application. Applications are due by June 30 and the walk will be Oct. 19.

Host families sought

Roselle officials are seeking families to host two students from Bochnia, Poland, who will be visiting the village for three weeks. The boy and girl, who will arrive Sept. 13, are participating in the Sister Cities program between Bochnia and Roselle. The students will attend Lake Park High School West campus during their visit. They have studied English and will have their own spending money and medical insurance. Host families are asked to provide housing, transportation and have a student at Lake Park High School West campus, officials said. Ice cream social planned

Oakbrook Terrace will hold a community ice cream social Sunday afternoon as part of the city's yearlong 50th anniversary celebration. All residents and former residents can attend the event, which will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. at Terrace View Park at 22nd Street and Route 83. Festivities will include historical memorabilia displays, games, fishing, paddle boats, a magician, barber shop quartet, disc jockey and a sky show by the Lima Lima Flight Team. Teen photo contest

Area teens are invited to enter the Bloomingdale Public Library's teen photography contest. Through July 1, teens may submit two entries to be displayed both in the library on the library's Web site. Naperville corridor meeting

The city of Naperville will hold a public meeting on the Ogden Avenue Corridor Enhancement Initiative at 7 p.m. Wednesday at city hall, 400 S. Eagle St. The open house will give business owners, landowners and other members of the public an update about the city's plans on the program, which is designed to assist property owners along Ogden Avenue with property improvements. Nurse honored

Ancy Zacharia, a nurse practitioner with HomeCare Physicians, a home-care practice of Central DuPage Physician Group, recently was awarded the American Academy of Home Care Physicians' House Call Clinician of the Year Award. The award is the highest honor bestowed by the group, an organization of physicians and other home-care professionals dedicated to promoting the practice of medicine in the home. Zacharia, an Addison resident, celebrated the milestone of 10,000 home visits with the Wheaton practice in 2007. In October 2007, she was appointed to the state's Older Adult Services Advisory Committee by Charles Johnson, director of the Illinois Department on Aging.

Fundraiser for KidsMatter

Lou Malnati's Pizzeria, 131 W. Jefferson Ave., Naperville, will hold a benefit night for KidsMatter from 5 to 10 p.m. Monday. During that time 20 percent of the night's sales will be donated to the nonprofit group that supports healthy kids and families. Both Lou Malnati's and KidsMatter are business partners of Naperville Unit District 203. Vocal groups from Naperville North, Naperville Central, Neuqua Valley and Waubonsie Valley high schools will perform.

Panel seeks members

The Naperville Sister Cities Commission, which meets once a month to plan activities that create opportunities for cultural exploration between Naperville and its Sister City, Nitra, Slovakia, is seeking to fill five vacancies. The two cities said they hope to strengthen culture, business, government and the environment by exchanging ideas and experiences.
