Wrap: Jacobs wraps up outright Valley title
Jacobs clinched the outright Valley Division title in the Fox Valley Conference with an 8-2 softball victory over Woodstock on Monday.
Lizzie Andrews (3-for-4) set a new school record of 37 RBI, surpassing her own mark. Andrews tripled and collected 3 RBI to keep the Golden Eagles (24-3, 12-0) undefeated in division play. Kara Arceneaux picked up the win, pitching all 7 innings with 4 strikeouts and 2 walks. Jenna Teson (3-for-4) and Sara Jacobson (2-for-4) each doubled twice.
Paw Paw 16, Westminster 2: The Warriors' season came to an end with this loss to Paw Paw at the Class 1A Newark regional. Katie Moeller took the loss in the circle for Westminster.
South Elgin 5, Waubonsie Valley 1: South Elgin trailed 1-0 until the fourth inning, when Kimberly Pierce (2-for-3) and Lauren Vitiello (1-for-3) hit back to back home runs. The Storm (17-9, 8-8) scored 3 more runs in the fifth to pad their lead and push past Waubonsie Valley for an Upstate Eight Conference victory. Cary Thereon earned the win, pitching 4 innings with 2 strikeouts and no walks. Rebecca French finished the job, pitching the final 3 innings with 1 walk and 5 strikeouts.
Huntley 4, Prairie Ridge 3: The Red Raiders (18-8, 11-3) pick up a Fox Valley (Fox) Conference victory in a tight one with Prairie Ridge. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Alex Albanese (2-for-2) reached on an error while Samantha Clemons (1-for-3) followed Albanese with a single. Jenna Mychko then ripped a triple to score 2 runs for the win. Clemons pitched all 7 innings for the win with a pair of strikeouts and 3 earned runs with no walks. Prairie Ridge's Erika Trojan (3-for-4) doubled and teammate Lauren Seegers (1-for-4) homered to keep PR in the game. Trojan took the loss, throwing all 7 innings and fanning five with 1 walk.
Streamwood 5, Elgin 4: The Maroons (3-15) battled but fell to Streamwood in the Upstate Eight. Kelly Patchett pitched all 7 innings, allowing 10 hits with 2 walks. Patchett and Caris Alan each finished with 2 hits. For the Sabres, Barb Posinger (7-15) allowed 7 hits with 5 strikeouts in 7 innings. Arielle Gallione and Posinger each went 2-for-3 with a double.
Richmond-Burton 6, Hampshire 4: The Whip-Purs fell in Big Northern East Conference action. Katie McBride (4-4) took the loss for Hampshire (16-13), pitching 4 innings with 1 strikeout and no walks. Ally Kent, Jessica Krause and Megan Roadcap led the offense with 2 hits apiece.
McHenry 7, Cary-Grove 2: The Trojans' Kristen Bauer pitched 4½ innings, allowing 8 hits while fanning six batters with no walks, but it wasn't enough to defeat McHenry for a Fox Valley (Valley) Conference victory. Maggie O'Brien was the only multiple hitter for Cary-Grove (14-13, 6-6), going 2-for-2 with a walk and 2 RBI.
Bartlett 6, St. Charles East 0: Lauren Wydra tossed a no-hitter in the Upstate Eight contest. Wydra finished with 15 strikeouts and 1 walk for this complete-game shutout. Wydra only threw 83 pitches in 7 innings Nicole Beck (2-for-3) led the Hawks offensively with 2 doubles and 2 RBI. Megan Morales also added a double with 2 RBI for Bartlett.
Crystal Lake South 2, Dundee-Crown 0: Emily Mahoney (7-0) tossed the shutout to remain undefeated in the circle. She allowed 3 hits with 8 strikeouts and 1 walk to lead CL South past the Chargers for a Fox Valley (Valley) win. Vicky Pyan led for the Gators on offense, going (2-for-3) with a double and 2 RBI. Emily Tillman also went 2-for-3 at the plate. Emily Kerkman pitched all 7 innings for the Chargers, allowing 7 hits with 1 walk while striking out 10.
Baseball
Dundee-Crown and Cary-Grove split: Dundee-Crown pulled out the win in the resumption of this suspended Valley Division game to snap Cary-Grove's six-game winning streak. Ben Rodriguez pitched all 7 innings for Dundee-Crown and Willie Larsen went 2-for-4 to pace the Chargers.
In the regularly scheduled game Cary-Grove (21-7, 8-3) shut out D-C 3-0. Junior Corey Bruns pitched a complete-game, 1-hitter for Cary-Grove to defeat Ben Rodriguez, who held the Trojans to 1 earned run on 3 hits in 5 innings pitched. The Chargers (12-12, 5-7) committed 4 errors.
Huntley 7, Johnsburg 0: Jeremy Grap collected the Fox Division win for Huntley (17-12, 6-6), going 6 innings with 2 hits and 5 strikeouts. Jimmy Gordon was 2-for-3 with a double and 2 RBI. Zach Liebman went 2-for-3 with a run, and Eliot Swiatly was 1-for-2, scored twice and drove in a run.
Prairie Ridge 5, Grayslake North 0: Logan Olson and Chad Ljunggren both went 2-for-3 to help lead Prairie Ridge (21-8, 12-0) remain undefeated in the Fox Division of the Fox Valley Conference. Will Mack also went 2-for-2 and the plate with a double and a RBI. Ljunggren doubled as well and had 2 RBI. T.J. Swank was the winning pitcher, going all 7 innings collecting 10 strike outs and walking none.
Crystal Lake South 9, Jacobs 6: Mike Castillo (3-2) pitched 5½ with 2 walks and 2 strikeouts but the Golden Eagles (11-10, 6-6) fell short in this Fox Valley (Valley) contest against the Gators (9-10). Ian Gardeck earned the win on the mound for the Gators (10-12, 4-7).
Aurora Central Catholic 12, Hampshire 5: Hampshire came up short in this nonconference playoff tuneup against ACC (11-13). Matt Kuefner (2-for-4) led Hampshire with a double, the Whip-Purs' only extra basehit. Zach Crinigan suffered the loss on the mound for Hampshire (14-13).
Montini 7, St. Edward 6: Going 2-for-3 with two doubles and a run batted in, Jordan Torres helped lead St. Edward (7-12, 6-8) in this Suburban Catholic Conference loss. Kyle Horn was 3-for-4 with a double and 3 RBI while Mike Kondrath went 2-for-4 with a double and RBI. T.J. Madzy finished 2-for-4. Kondrath suffered the loss.
Westminster Christian 5, Walter Luther 4: Ben Stevenson, a freshman brought up to pitch against Walther Lutheran in a Private School League makeup game, earned his first varsity win. Stevenson pitched 6 innings with 1 strikeout. Brandon Siewert and Ben Palmer both doubled to pace Westminster Christian (22-9-1, 12-4). Shortstop Cory Hodge went 2-for-3.
Girls soccer
Hampshire 8, Keith School 0: Devon Murphy had a hat trick to lead the Whip-Purs (14-6-2) to victory over Keith School in the Class A Stillman Valley Sectional. Teammate Gianina Estocado also put a pair of goals in the back of the net on an assist from Kelly Plichta. Kristy Pfaffinger, Christine Shumacher and Kelsey Burke all added goals for Hampshire while Cindy Brigham, Burke and Murphy all picked up assists. Alex Heinrich and Alex Dumoulin each shared time in the net but recorded no saves.
"All the girls played well tonight," Hampshire coach Patrick O'Brien said. "Murphy took her game to another level. She is providing us with great senior leadership when we need it the most."
North Shore Country Day 4, Westminster 1: Amanda Shelton scored the only goal for the Warriors off an assist from Candace Sherman in a season-ending loss at the Class A Westminster Christian regional in Elgin. Rachel Farquhar tallied 15 saves in the net for Westminster (1-12-1).
College baseball
Judson University Baseball Gains Awards: The Judson University Men's Baseball team earned some hardware Monday from both the CCAC and the NCCAA.
JU head coach Rich Benjamin received the NCCAA (National Christian Collegiate Athletic Association) North Central Region "Coach of the Year" award for guiding Judson to an 18-25 record in his first season. He helped Judson to their first-ever CCAC Touranment Championship and an at-large bid to the NAIA Region VII Tournament.
Judson's Kyle Kobernus (Naperville, Ill.) and Oscar DePablas (Venezuela) each earned CCAC awards. Kobernus was named to the All-CCAC honorable mention team with a 6-5 record and 60 strikeouts. He was 5-1 in the CCAC and earned a key win over Purdue-North Central.
DePablos was named the CCAC "Freshman of the Year" for his all-around play. He finished the season batting .418 with 4 triples and 18 RBI. He was third in the CCAC in batting and triples.
Gaining NCCAA All-Region awards were Kobernus, DePablos, and Brett Ehrlich (Bartlett High School). Ehrlich was third on the team in batting at .322 and led the team with 14 doubles and 30 RBI.
Judson had their finest season in the history of the program by claiming the CCAC Tournament Championship, gaining an at-large bid to the NAIA Region VII Tournament, tying the school record for CCAC wins (12), and tying the record for consecutive victories (9). The team also broke and tied several team and individual records this season.
