Portions of AIDS quilt to be displayed at ECC

Elgin Community College will display portions of the AIDS Memorial Quilt on Tuesday, Oct. 13, and Wednesday, Oct. 14, as part of its observance of AIDS Awareness Days.

During both days, sections of the quilt will be exhibited from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the Instruction Center Lounge on the Main Campus, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin and at the Fountain Square Campus, 51 S. Spring St., Elgin, Room FSQ 439. The display is free and open to the public.

The AIDS Memorial Quilt is considered to be the world's largest ongoing community arts project. The entire quilt, which began in 1987, consists of more than 47,000 colorful panels and memorializes more than 83,900 people who have died from AIDS.

In addition to the quilt display, the Open Door Clinic in Elgin will host a panel of individuals who will share their story and their experiences living with HIV or AIDS from 11 a.m. to noon Oct. 14 in ICT 201 on the Main Campus. The panel also will inform people about the facts of HIV and AIDS.

ECC Student Life and GLOBES (Gay, Lesbian, or Bisexual ECC Students and Supporters) will provide information about HIV and AIDS, available in the ICT Lounge during these days. Staff from the Renz Addiction Counseling Center of Elgin will provide free HIV testing from noon to 2 p.m. on Oct. 14 in the Instructional Center, Room ICT 126. Testing will be secure and confidential.
