Chargers' medley relay runs 2nd at Top Times

Dundee-Crown's distance medley team took second in the state Saturday at the Illinois Prep Top Times Indoor Classic held at the Shirk Center on the campus of Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington.

The D-C distance team of Paul Smith, Dan Magnant, Kurt Schefferahn and Anthony Manfrin finished in a time of 10:52.14, just off the winning pace of 10:51.22 turned in by the victorious team from Brother Rice.

"It was a great accomplishment for them," said Dundee-Crown coach Tom Smith, whose son Paul is a member of the relay team. "They ran great and they're all really excited."

Burlington Central's Dan Hagberg took fourth place in the 55-meter hurdles in a time of 7.78 while Central teammate Ryan Phebus finished seventh in the 800-meter run (1:58.82) and eighth in the 1600-meter run (4:33.21)

David Carbajal of Prairie Ridge placed fifth in the shot put with his put of 54 feet, 4½ inches.

Baseball

Harrisburg 2, Westminster Christian 1: The Warriors (2-3) came up on the losing end of an instant classic during their swing through downstate Illinois.

Ace Ben Palmer, a Dallas Baptist University recruit, had a no-hitter going two outs into the seventh inning until an error at shortstop gave life to host Harrisburg (9-1).

Palmer hit the next batter, and a subsequent bunt single loaded the bases. The next hitter stroked a groundball past third, scoring 2 runs to leave Palmer on the losing end despite 11 strikeouts against just 2 walks.

"Ben definitely pitched like a Division I pitcher today," said Westminster coach Jeff Moeller. "He had command and poise and did a great job. It's a tough way to lose a ballgame."

Prairie Ridge 2, Bartlett 0: The Wolves shut out Bartlett in Crystal Lake with a combined 2-hitter from Nick Martini (4 IP, 2 hits, 5 Ks, 1 BB) and Mike Heesch (3 IP, 6Ks, 1 BB). Dan Kasper (0-1) pitched well but took the loss for the Hawks. In 5¿ innings of work, Kasper struck out five, walked four, allowing 2 runs, 1 earned.

Prairie Ridge 10, Palatine 0: The Wolves rode the submarine-style pitching of senior T.J. Swank to a 5-inning victory. Swank shut down the Pirates on 2 hits in 5 innings, struck out nine and walked one. Bobby Martin, Nick Martini and Logan Olson each doubled for Prairie Ridge (3-0).

"We got good pitching and defense and timely hitting," said Prairie Ridge coach David Haskins, who until this season was an assistant coach at Palatine.

Bartlett 3, Palatine 1:ŒThe Hawks earned their first win of the season behind left-hander Mike Derby, who tossed 6 innings of 1-hit baseball, striking out six and walking four. He allowed 1 unearned run. Junior Kyle Burden went 2-for-2 with a double and a walk, and Ryan Walker went 1-for-4 and scored a run. Kyle King pitched a scoreless seventh to earn the save.

Crystal Lake South 14, Harlem 7: Steve Kedroski went 3-for-5 with a double, a home run and 5 RBI, and Derek Mortensen smacked a 2-run home run in his only at-bat to lead the Gators. Ryan Kelley went 2-for-3 and scored 3 runs. Tim Ambrose earned the win despite giving up 5 runs on 6 hits in 4 innings.

Crystal Lake South 14, Antioch 2: The Gators improved to 2-0 with a combination of good starting pitching and hot hitting. Junior Ian Gardeck held Antioch scoreless on 3 hits in 4 innings with 7 strikeouts and 2 walks. At the plate, Danny Walsh went 2-for-2 with 2 home runs and 3 RBI. Tony Pauls finished 2-for-4 with 2 runs and 4 RBI, and Gavin Meyer went 2-for-4, stole a base and scored a run.

Girls soccer

Huntley (3-0) won its own invitational with a 7-0 victory over Marengo and a 6-0 pasting of Indian Creek.

Aimee Wronski led the Red Raiders with a combined 5 goals in the two matches.

Freshman Bre Burry managed 2 goals, while teammates Megan Hamm, Samantha Zobott (4 assists), Corine Wronski, Taylor Henning-Fletter (2 assists) Lauren Opolony and Kaylee O'Brien each scored goals.

Sophomore Sarah Hoffman was in goal both games but didn't have to make a save, thanks to Huntley's solid defense.

Streamwood 7, Addison Trail 0: The Sabres (1-1-2) defeated Addison Trail for a nonconference victory. Violet Sanchez led Streamwood with 3 goals. Alanah Thompson collected 2 goals and 3 assists, while teammate Lonnie Prout netted 2 goals and was credited with 2 assists. Pearl Patel was in goal, collecting 3 saves to earn the shutout.

Glenbard South 1, Burlington Central 0: The Rockets (0-5-0) fell in nonconference play against the Raiders. Kim DeRaedt was in goal for Burlington Central and tallied 16 saves.

Cary-Grove 5, Elk Grove 0: Kelli Anderson put 2 goals on the scoreboard to lead the Trojans to a nonconference victory. Kelsey Passaglia and A.J. Wilhelm also found the back of the net for Cary-Grove (2-0).

College softball

Judson falls to Missouri Baptist: Judson University (12-10) dropped two games to Missouri Baptist 10-1 and 12-2. Beth Eklund (3-2) took the loss for Judson in Game 1. She pitched 1½ innings and surrendered 7 runs, 4 earned. Reliever Aimee Ewert finished the game and had 2 strikeouts and allowed 3 runs. Kristin Krueger, Nicole Dimiceli, and Deb Leganski had the only Eagles hits.

In Game 2, Nicole Dimiceli hit her fourth home run of the year, and Ewert opended the bottom of the second inning with her first home run of the season to cut MBU's lead to 5-2.

Ewert took the loss for Judson, pitching 4 innings with 1 strikeout. Judson will host Wheaton College at 4 p.m. Monday at the Elgin Sports Complex.

College baseball

Judson University sweeps ONU: The Judson University baseball team (3-13, 2-2) swept Olivet Nazarene University in CCAC action. Senior Kyle Kobernus pitched a complete-game, 3-hit shutout to notch his first win of the season. Kobernus went all 7 innings and posted 5 strikeouts. He retired the side in order in the second and third innings.

Judson scored 1 run in the first inning when Bret Ehrlich grounded out to second base to score Oscar DePablos. Judson added another run in the sixth inning when Ehrlich doubled home Angel Cisneros for a 2-0 lead. Kevin Fischer went 3-for-3 to lead Judson, DePablos went 2-for-4 and Angel Cisneros 2-for-3.

In Game 2 , Judson took the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning when Ehrlich doubled to right field to drive across Zach Scipione, and DePablos. Scipione singled to bring home Fischer for the final score of the day.

DePablos went 4-for-4 for Judson, Scipione 2-for-4 and Ehrlich 2-for-3 with 2 RBI. Alci Gonzales pitched all 7 innings for his first collegiate win. She struck out five and did not allow an earned run.

Weather permitting, Judson will play its home opener Monday against CCAC rival Trinity International at 4 p.m.
