Ross upsets Marzejon in 200

Moments after the race, Sarah Ross was still in utter disbelief.

The Jacobs senior, who won the McHenry County pole vault championship Thursday, stunned Huntley senior standout Coryn Marzejon in the 200 meters.

Ross won the event in a time of 25.37 at Friday's McHenry County meet held at Crystal Lake Central High School

Marzejon, who holds the meet record with a time of 25.28 and was a 3-time winner in the event, ran a 25.65 to finish second.

"I know what I just did, but I still can't believe it," said Ross. "I just kept pushing and pushing. It is an unbelievable feeling."

Marzejon, who did win the 100 in 12.83 for the fourth straight year and the 400 for the fourth time in a time of 58.49, gave Ross credit.

"Sarah ran a great race," said Marzejon. "I got off to a good start, but got a little tired at the end."

Crystal Lake South grabbed top prize at the county meet for the third straight year.

The Gators scored 112 points, greatly outdistancing Huntley, which finished second with a score of 84.

South grabbed top honors in 6 individual events and 3 relays. Kellie Schuh claimed top honors in the 300 low hurdles (46.42) and the triple jump (37-3). Sister Aimee claimed the 100 hurdles (14.80) and the long jump (16-9). Both Schuhs were On the winning 1,600 relay team which was clocked in a time of 4:04.3 and Aimee Schuh was on the winning 800 relay team, which crossed the finish line in a time of 1:49.40.

Gators' sophomore distance standout Kristina Aubert won the 3200 in a time of 11:20.77 and the 1,600 in 5:12.59. The 3,200 relay team of Marianne Collard, Stephanie Woods, Emily Lenzini and Chelsey Tyllia claimed top honors with a time of 9:57.66.

"I thought I ran well tonight," said Aubert. "I paced myself in both races and had a lot left at the end. In the 1600, I started slow but picked it up when I needed to."

South coach Kristy Tenopir was pleased with the title and the performance of the Schuhs and Aubert.

"Our top kids ran well tonight," said Tenopir. "It seems like the bigger the meet the better they run. This was a total team effort."

For Huntley, other than Marzejon's 2 wins, the Red Raiders won the 400 relay in a time of 52.20. Members of the team included Marzejon, Shannon Callahan, Amy Fanella and Samantha Rawson.

Ross won 2 events as Jacobs finished seventh with a score of 38 points. Cary-Grove was fourth with a score of 53 points and Prairie Ridge placed fifth with a score of 49.

Boys: After winning 5 straight McHenry County championships, Jacobs watched as Cary-Grove claimed the 2007 county title.

The Golden Eagles are back in the winner's circle.

Jacobs scored 111 points to claim the team title for the sixth time in 7 years. McHenry aas a distant second with a score of 82.

"It is very nice to get the trophy back," said Jacobs coach Jason Borhart. "We had a lot of kids who met or exceeded expectations."

The Golden Eagles won 6 individual events and 2 relays.

JM Salcedo led the way with wins in the 100 (11.26) and 200 (22.67). Salcedo was also on the winning 400 relay team which was clocked in 43.68 and the 800 relay which took top honors with a time of 1:31.32.

Tim Constant, who was on the winning 400 relay team, claimed the 400 in a quick time of 49.88

"There were so many good kids in this race I knew I had to run well," said Constant. "I didn't have the luxury of pacing myself. I had to go all out the whole race."

Other winners for the Golden Eagles were Darius Bowers (long jump 22-5 ½), Brad Foote (discus, 164-6) and Danny Trevor (110 Hurdles, 15.0). Bowers was also on the winning 400 and 800 relay teams.

Crystal Lake South placed a solid third with a score of 79. The Gators got first-place efforts from Mike Van Dorpe (Triple jump, 43-8 ½), Matt Zaluckyj (800, 2:01.15) and Phil Hernandez (1600, 4:28.16). Zaluckyj clipped Huntley's Todd Farbiak (2:01.19) at the finish line.

"There were so many great runners in this race I knew I had to run well," said Zaluckyj. "I am very pleased with the way I ran."

Huntley was fourth with a score of 65. The Red Raiders won the 3200 relay in a time of 8:13.62. Members of the team were Justin Cassidy, Casey Poppenfoose, Alex Beruscha and Farbiak. Huntley won the 1,600 relay in a time of 3:27.24. Cassidy, Poppenfoose, Farbiak and Josh Silvia were members of the team.

Cary-Grove placed fifth with a score of 48 and PR was eighth with 34 points. PR's David Carbajal won the shot put with a throw of 54-1 ¾.
