Storm run strong at SCN

With 135 points, South Elgin finished sixth overall among the nine teams competing at this year's St. Charles North girls cross country invitational. Freshman Jordan Tuin led the way for the Storm earning a third-place individual finish with a time of 19:10. Katie Goplerud finished 14th overall at 19:58.

St. Charles North won the invite with 63 points followed by Elk Grove (67 points) and Prospect (78).

Cary-Grove earned seventh place with 157 points behind a 25th place run from Paige Freund (20:29). Katherine O'Connor was also among the Top 30, finishing 28th with a time of 20:41.

Girls cross country

At Lisle Invitational: While Hampshire finished 18th overall among the 27 teams competing at the 22nd Annual Lisle Maine Event Invitational with 460 points, Kelly Plichta had a huge day for the Whip-Purs. Plichta recorded a fifth-place overall finish, completing the race in a time of 19:46.

As a team, Burlington Central finished third overall with 121 points, trailing only Plainfield North (103 points) and the invitational champion, Geneva (66 points).

Maggie Gannon and Markelle Turk led the way for the Rockets finishing ninth and 10th respectively with times of 19:50 and 19:51. Katie Puccio (20:44) also finished among the Top 30 at 26th overall.

Boys cross country

At St. Charles North Invitational: Elgin's Ricardo Mancha had a big day at the St. Charles North Invitational earning an 11th place finish, completing the race with a time of 16:07 to help the Maroons to a sixth-place team finish with 152 points. Daniel Schmerber (17:16), Jose Duarte (17:17) and Matthew Eck (17:20) formed a pack for Elgin to finish 32nd, 33rd and 34th respectively.

Invitational host St. Charles North finished with a collective 28 points to win the event followed by Batavia with 85 points and Hersey with 90 points.

Streamwood finished behind Elgin with 198 combined points as Roger Klein led the way with a 17:02 for 31st place. With 289 points, South Elgin finished 10th overall led by Kevin Gianaris, who finished 45th with a time of 17:44.

At Lisle Invitational: Amidst the 26 teams competing at the 22nd Annual Lisle 'Maine Event' Invitational, Hampshire earned a 17th place team finish with 486 points. Marmion dominated the invite finishing with 31 points for championship honors, while Geneva finished third with 54 points.

For the Whips, Tanner Holman led the way crossing the finish line at 17:26 which was good enough for 17th place. Matt Drendel was the next to finish for Hampshire with an 18:15 for 54th place overall.

At Antioch: Jacobs' push for fifth place was led by sophomore Dan Carey in 13th and senior Kyle Kopinski in 17th. Nick Ellingson added a 26th-place finish for the Golden Eagles.

"It was a big improvement for the boys today and it's much better than where we've been at this year," said Jacobs coach Kevin Christian. "Kyle (Kopinski) is usually our No. 1 runner, but he had a little trouble today. I think (Carey) will keep this momentum for the rest of the year."

Josh Uvodich was Crystal Lake South's top runner in sixth place as Uvodich edged Lakes sophomore Blake Franson.

Lake Forest rolled to the championship of the 16-team meet at Fox River Park in southern Wisconsin with 37 points to topple Crystal Lake Central (72) in second and Richmond-Burton (104) in third in the Antioch-hosted invite. Warren nipped Jacobs 111-113 for fourth place on the very hilly course followed by Crystal Lake South (160) in sixth, and Lakes (194) in seventh.
