Barrington cruises to MSL crown

Barrington owned the top of the podium in Saturday's Mid-Suburban League girls swimming meet, which was held in the Fillies' pool.

A Fillie won each of the 11 swimming events, and Barrington took home the team trophy for the 18th consecutive year with 323 points.

Hersey finished second with 174 points, followed by Fremd (170.5), Buffalo Grove (136) and Palatine (122).

"It's a honor for the kids to be able to do that," said Fillies coach Jim Bart of his team winning each swim event. "We're interested in performances. Winning is great, but the performance is the foremost importance."

Barrington senior Emily Fogle won her four events - 200-yard medley relay, 200-yard IM, 100-yard breaststroke and 400-yard freestyle relay. Her time of 2:07.63 in the IM broke her meet record and the school record.

Fogle's time of 1:03.36 in the 100-yard breaststroke set a meet record.

"It was a pretty good day," Fogle said. "From more of a team aspect we did really well. Individually, I thought I was fine. There are a couple things I need to improve for sectionals."

Fillies' junior Jacqueline Holdsberg also had four first0place finishes.

She was part of the 200-yard medley and 400-free relay teams with Fogle in addition to winning the 100-yard backstroke and 50-free.

"I think I did pretty well," Holdsberg said. "Coach Bart going into it said, 'I just want performance, and for everyone to work on beating their times.' I definitely took my races out fast so I could try to perform well before sectionals."

Eighteen years is a long time for one school to remain atop a conference - but that's exactly where Barrington's streak sits.

"It's just a good tradition going," Holdsberg said. "Every year we always have good girls that show up. We just keep progressing as years go on. Hopefully we can keep it going every year."

Sophomore Erika Elliott won the 200-free, 100-free and was part of the winning 200- and 400-free relays.

Her freshman sister, Danielle, won the 500-free and was also on the 200-free relay.

"That's one of the few times they've been together on relays," Bart said. "We usually try to keep them separate."
