Glenbard program focuses on alcohol and teens

When alcohol hits the bloodstream, it's eventual effects on the brain are different on adolescents as opposed to adults.

Those differences, and the significance of them, is the focus of a presentation for parents at two schools in Glenbard High School District 87 on Thursday, Oct. 2.

Speaker Aaron White, a psychologist from Duke University, specializes in alcohol research as it relates to the development of the adolescent brain.

"He's going to discuss the latest research regarding adolescent substance abuse, brain development and the impact of alcohol on adolescent behavior and brain function. He'll also share his strategies for using this information when talking to kids about the risk of alcohol use," said Gilda Ross, student and community projects coordinator for District 87.

The program is free and open to parents of any high school or middle school students. In this case, parents are encouraged to bring along their teenage children, Ross said.

Two opportunities exist to see the program: 11 a.m. at Glenbard South High School, 23W200 Butterfield Road, Glen Ellyn, and 7 p.m. at Glenbard East, 1014 S. Main St., Lombard. A separate meet-and-greet with new East Principal Josh Chambers will start at 6:45 p.m.
