Cook County All-Area girls soccer
Caroline Condon | Barrington
This two-time all-area selection is a lightning-quick outside midfielder, with a work rate that is second to none and the ability to go forward with the ball or track back to defend for 80 minutes with ease. "Caroline is our best 1-vs.-1 player, who can serve great balls to the spot, score, assist with energy and pace," says coach Ryan Stengren. She added all-conference and all-sectional honorable mention awards to her resume after a 9-goal, 7-assist season.
Amanda Filian | Palatine
A move from the middle into the back provided a young backline with the unmovable, composed, water-tight sweeper it needed to stay competitive in MSL for coach/father Willie Filian. "She held us together in the back, and her experience in reading the game, abilty to tackle and fiery competitiveness kept us in most matches," said Filian. All-conference, all-sectional post-season honors were well deserved, for technically gifted and confident sophomore.
Julie Fredian | Hersey
Two-sport star (also starter on the basketball team) is a lightning-fast air-to-surface keeper who can react to point-blank shots as quick as anyone to give Huskies superb back-line just one more reason to discourage opponents to score. "Without Julia we don't have the success we've had the last couple of seasons," says Hersey coach Brad Abel. The school's all-time leader in shutouts (38) gave up just 14 goals in 23 matches (0.60) for the two-time MSL East champions and showed terrific command in the box against all set-pieces with athleticism.
Brenna Fitzpatrick | Conant
Junior transferred from St. Viator, where she was an all-area pick and never missed a beat for Cougars as she helped the club to their marvelous postseason run with slick passing and movement while finding top-flight frontrunners with regularity. "Brenna is calm and collected as our playmaker, and has the skills, composure and touch to be our starting point in the attack," said coach Jason Franco. The two-time all-sectional and 2008 all-ESCC player recorded 2 goals and 10 assists this season.
Taylor Fritz | Rolling Meadows
Came back from an ACL injury in 2008 which limited her to just 4 matches to have a superb final season for coach Jeff Adkins with 13 goals, 2 assists to earn well deserved all-conference, all-sectional honorable mention, and first all-area postseason honors. "Taylor is fast, has excellent conditioning and is such a threat with each touch on the ball," says Adkins. A four-year starter, she helped the Mustangs to a pair of MSL East and regional titles and finished with 37 goals. May walk on at Iowa next fall.
Kristen Gierman | Hersey
There is no better model for prototype backliner than this two-time all-area player who would be the answer to any club's central defensive prayers. "There's not enough words to describe the impact Kristen has made in the Hersey soccer program," said coach Brad Abel. The four-year starter and two-sport star (basketball) has struck fear throughout the area with her free-kick artistry (14 goals, 37 assists in career), and with her terrific vision and strength and courage in the air and on the ball, it is no wonder she earned the praise of Abel and others with her second all-MSL and all-sectional accolades. Her 22 assists last season set a school record. May walk-on at Illinois next year.
Katelyn Hammerlund | St. Viator
It was a break-out season for the young striker who led the Lions in scoring with 12 goals with 10 assists to become one of the few 'wing wizards' in the area, which allowed her club to play down the flanks on a regular basis. "She began the season in the midfield, but we quickly learned how special and dangerous she could be for us once we moved her up front," says coach Sam Donnelly of his all-ESCC, all-sectional freshman.
Kate Hasse | Barrington
The quick-thinking, neat-passing Fillies midfielder formed a powerful axis with her dynamic mates up front all season long and has been a key component in success the club has achieved in 2009. "With her long-range shooting ability, unselfish play and ability to win balls and create, Kate became that extra weapon we needed in the middle and on both sides of the ball," said coach Ryan Stengren of the all-conference veteran who is full of energy and forceful in the run of play.
Kaitlin Hillner | Buffalo Grove
No doubt tremendous skill and talent on basketball courts translated over and onto pitch for this four-year starter and two-time all-area backline star for coach Pat Dudle. "Kaitlin is one of the most competitive players that I have ever been around," he said, "and has been the heart and soul of Bison soccer for the last two years." Hard-working, bright, fierce in the tackle and inspirational with every 80 minutes recorded, the co-captain earned a second straight all-MSL, all-sectional honor this season, and her leadership will be missed.
Jessie Hubly | Elk Grove
An integral part of the Grens' two most successful seasons ever, this four-year player struck the game-winner in 2006 in a 1-0 upset win over Maine South in the regional final. "Jessie is one of the most athletic and dangerous players that we've ever had here, and a 1-vs.-1 nightmare for any defender," says coach Dan Klaus, which says plenty after the likes of Kaite Klimczak and Rachel Sloan have worn the Grens' shirt. The Loyola-bound midfielder is stylish, comfortable with both feet and can deliver an eye-popping through ball or hit a sudden shot from outside the box with lethal accuracy. She had 11 goals in 2009 (36 in her career, and 27 assists). All-sectional this season, and a two-time all-MSL choice.
Amy Johnson | Barrington
Not many defenders in area can boast the marking skills and ability to go forward of this two-time all-area pick, who has had an exceptional season on the outside for coach Ryan Stengren. "Amy is not only one of the best 1-vs.-1 defenders in the area, but also a terrific attacking player who can play the ball into the run of play with the best of them," he said. A handful in set pieces with her well-placed serves, the two-time all-MSL, sectional junior finished second on the club with 14 assists.
Kaitlyn Kinsella | Fremd
This gifted four-year starter for the MSL champions provided wonderful vision, close control and a calming effect in the middle of the park all season to earn a well-deserved spot on all-area team in addition to her first all-conference, all-sectional recognition. "Kaitlyn is a gifted player possessing superior skills and tactical awareness, while helping dictate play and an awareness of when to push the attack or bunker in on defense or hold possession," says coach Steve Keller. Kinsella had 5 goals and 2 assists in 2009, giving the senior 9 and 20 for career. Will play next season at Augustana.
Kathryn Korff | Hersey
This two-time all-area pick earned the praise from Glenbrook South's coaching staff as one of the toughest, hardest-working midfielders seen this season after heartbreaking PK shootout loss to Titans in sectional semifinals at Libertyville. Another player from the Huskies' basketball program who gave her club an aerial presence, authority in the middle and was a formidable bedrock on a regular basis. "Kathryn is an absolute workhorse who can run forever and has the uncanny ability to dominate on both sides of the ball," said coach Brad Abel of his leading scorer (5 goals, 16 overall) and three-year starter. All-conference, honorable all-sectional for the first-time.
Mary Kubiuk | Barrington
An easy choice to share all-area co-captain honors after the wonderfully gifted striker found the back of the net 29 times to give her an astounding 83 in her career to go along with 25 helpers. The Yale-bound four-year starter earned a well-deserved all-state honor recently, to go along with her two-time all-MSL, sectional and all-area awards.
Rachel Lenke | Prospect
Her first full season since freshman year ended in selection as MSL East Player of the Year and subsequent spot on all-area team for Augustana-bound striker to cap wonderful career for coach Tom Froats. "Rachel is that complete player that we all want, who plays with great energy on both sides of the ball, while providing wonderful leadership and combining it all with a strong academic performance," says Froats. The all-action captain represented the heartbeat of the Knights' attack with incisive running and was the focal point when in the opponent's end. Finishes sixth on the school's all-time scoring list (16 goals, 5 assists) and earned an all-sectional honor as well.
Chloe Majkowski | Wheeling
While a very young 'Cats team went through growing pains this spring, its junior goalkeeper stood out among all the top clubs with her spot on the 2009 all-area team to go along with all-conference and all-sectional honors. "Chloe has literally kept us in matches that we have no right to be, and given us a chance to win or tie when finished," said coach Darren Llewellyn. Skilled enough to be the best field player if placed there, this two-sport star (basketball) excels in the air, has excellent range in her dives and has super glue for hands in traffic in and around the box. She had 4 shutouts and 8 in two years.
Laura Mayer | Fremd
The MSL West Player of the Year boasts a tactical, technical and spatial awareness rarely seen while helping bring the Vikings attack' into sharp focus when needed during its run to an unprecented seventh MSL soccer championship trophy. A delightful playmaker, full of clever passes, whether up top or as the ignition key to the Vikings' attack, the 2009 all-stater and three-year starter scored 13 goals and assisted on 14 to bring her career totals to 25 and 22.
Colleen Nolan | St. Viator
A steadying force for a young club which reached regional final before state-ranked Glenbrook South ended the season for coach Sam Donnelly and four-year star who was a commanding figure along the back en route to her third all-area selection. "Colleen really helped get us through our last two matches in the postseason, and there were times during her career that I cannot imagine anyone in the state playing her position any better than her," said Donnelly. A terrific enforcer along the back thanks to her strength in the tackle and in the air, the tenacious three-time all-ESCC player grabbed a second all-sectional honor recently as well.
Stephanie Pouse | Schaumburg
Another in a long line of young defenders who made their mark on the game this fall both in the MSL and around the area, this Saxons' sophomore displayed sound positional sense, wonderful timing in the tackle and a formidable barrier for a young club on the rise in the MSL West. "Stephanie was always assigned to mark the best player on the opposing team, and as a well-trained ODP player, she is very good at reading the game and knowing when to execute runs forward and get involved in our attack," says coach Greg Charvat. Others must have noticed as well as witnessed by her all-MSL and all-sectional postseason honors.
Courtney Raetzman | Conant
Rarely will a freshman enter the scene to become a player who makes such a large footprint on the soccer landscape as did this Cougars' midfielder, who earned all-state honors in her rookie season under coach Jason Franco. "Courtney is a very talented and gifted athlete who has uncanny vision and touch, and often makes difficult plays look so easy while being such a complete player on both sides of the ball," he said. Terrific pace and a bright playmaker who can steer the play everywhere at anytime, or dream something up from nothing which ends up in the back of the net for herself or her teammates. Raetzman led her club with 11 goals and had 3 assists, and was also named all-conference.
Danielle Romano | Fremd
With the touch of a midfielder, this first time all-area selection gave the Vikings that rare prize that can defend, provide accurate distribution out of the back or free-kick expertise and a willingness to give 80 minutes of high-powered play from endline-to-endline. "Danielle is our anchor in the defense, and foils most attacks with strength, speed, skill and awareness to allow her to make the game look easy," says coach Steve Keller. All-MSL, all-sectional two-year starter has already made a verbal commitment to attend East Carolina.
Alyssa Stylski | Conant
Tireless energy and industry up top from this first-time all-area striker usually ended in opponents being broken down in their own end from this speedy senior, who would create for others as well as herself up and down the flank. "Alyssa has shown the pace and skill to get by even the best defenders, and with her quick feet she can deliver a quality cross each and every time, and has been our most dangerous player down the stretch," says coach Jason Franco. Deft touch, can also be destructive in close, which is validated by 26 goals, 24 assists in career to go along with two-time all-MSL and honorable mention all-sectional status.
Chrissy Tooren | Hoffman Estates
Injuries might have slowed this four-year, Loyola-bound star, but the Hawks' captain quickly found her explosive pace and scoring touch when she returned to strike for 13 goals (9 assists), to give the all-state striker 57 in her career and a third all-area award. "Chrissy is a dynamic player who will draw two to three defenders whenever she has the ball, but can single-handedly change the outcome of a match at anytime," says coach Rob Schmidt. With a playing style that encourages others, the four-time all-MSL scoring star knows only one way to play, with ambition, tenancity and the desire and will to succeed and make others around her better.
Dontina Walsten | Maine West
With the likes of conference and state powers New Trier and Glenbrook South taking center stage, this three-year starter turned in a superb season by scoring 12 goals to help the Warriors' captain earn her first all-area honors in addition to go along with all-CSL and sectional recognition as well. "Dontina means so much to our program as she provides great leadership and work ethic on and off the field to a very young club," says coach Aaron Fleming. With the combination of speed, powerful shot and desire to take others on, the Warriors captain was easily the go-to player in the attack. Finished with 29 career goals and 8 assists.
