Fall fest canceled:

The LivingWell Cancer Resource Center in Geneva has canceled its Fall Festival, which had been set for today.

'Hayday' party:

Geneva Park District hosts "Halloween Hayday" from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Stephen D. Persinger Recreation Center. Children will enjoy games, crafts, the Mad Science Room, costume and jack-o'-lantern contests, storytelling and trick-or-treating. Preregister at the Geneva Community Center, 710 Western Ave. or Persinger Recreation Center, 3507 Kaneville Road, or at genevaparks.org. $5 per child preregistration/$6 per child at the door. Adults are free.

Treats at businesses:

Trick-or-treat from 10 a.m. to noon today at businesses in downtown Batavia. Participating businesses will have a "Trick-or-Treat Here" poster in their windows.

East High jazz concert:

The St. Charles East jazz bands will take to the stage at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Norris Cultural Arts Center for their first concert performance of the school year. The concert will feature the jazz band and jazz workshop. The jazz band portion of the concert will include music written by Sonny Rollins, Ray Bryant, and Richie Powell. The jazz workshop will be performing music written by Duke Ellington, Bill Holman, Oliver Nelson and Astor Piazzolla. Tickets are $3 and will be available at the door. Aurora looks for nominees:

Aurora will accept nominations through Nov. 20 for the 2010 Outstanding African-American Award by the city's African-American Heritage Advisory Board. Agencies, organizations and community members are invited to nominate residents who exhibit leadership, volunteerism and service to the African-American community. ECC's Spartan Drive closed:

Spartan Drive, the primary access road to Elgin Community College, is closed to traffic until roughly Dec. 1 from McLean Boulevard to Renner Drive. The 3,000-foot section of roadway on the east side of the college, will undergo resurfacing and reconstruction. To access the college from McLean during construction, use Fleetwood Drive or Weld Road to Second Street. From Randall Road, Spartan Drive closes at its intersection with Renner Drive, forcing drivers to turn north on Renner to access the campus. Final surfacing is expected in the spring For details, call (847) 214-7364.

Psychology of reading:

"Reading on Earth" will be presented at 7 p.m. Dec. 7 by Donna Seaman, Booklist associate editor and book critic for Chicago Public Radio, at the Batavia Public Library, 10 S. Batavia Ave. She will discuss the psychology of reading and how reading helps people connect to the living world. The program is free. Registration is requested.
