Abduction victim to speak out

Her 1996 abduction was among the cases that prompted passage in 1998 of Illinois' Sexually Violent Persons Commitment Act. Her presentation Harper, "Shattering the Silence of Sexual Violence," will take place at 1:45 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Building J Theatre, Room J143. The talks are free and open to the public. Dist. 211 seeks board member

The Palatine-Schaumburg High School District 211 board seeks applicants interested in filling the school board position left vacant following the Feb. 14 death of Susan Kenley-Rupnow. Kenley-Rupnow, a longtime Hoffman Estates village trustee, was elected in 2007 to the school board. During a tribute to her at Thursday's board meeting, board President Robert LeFevre said "it's impossible to know how many lives she touched." State code requires the board to appoint a new member by March 31, and that person will complete Kenley-Rupnow's term, which ends in 2011. Those interested should submit an application with a cover letter before 4 p.m. Monday, March 9. Applications are available at all five District 211 schools, as well as at d211.org. Send applications to: Anna Klimkowicz, Board of Education Secretary, Township High School District 211, G.A. McElroy Administration Center, 1750 S. Roselle Road, Palatine, IL 60067-7379. For more information, call the superintendent's office at (847) 755-6610.

Special meeting in Hoffman

The Hoffman Estates Planning, Building and Zoning Committee will hold a special meeting at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 5, at Timber Trails Elementary School, 1675 McDonough Road, to talk about proposed development on the northwest corner of Beverly and Shoe Factory roads. No formal action will take place at the meeting. A developer wants to change zoning for the property to allow for residences on land previously zoned for commercial development. Two multistory senior housing buildings over nine acres are proposed, and an office building could also be built. The village wants to hear the public's input. Call (847) 781-2660 for more details or e-mail Peter Gugliotta, the village's director of planning, at peter.gugliotta@hoffmanestates.org.
