Des Plaines Izaak Walton League to host annual Turkey Party Nov. 16

The Des Plaines Chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America, a national conservation organization, will host its annual Turkey Party fundraiser on Thursday, Nov. 16, at the chapter's clubhouse, 1841 S. River Road, in Des Plaines. Door opens at 6 p.m., drawings for turkeys begin at 7 p.m. All are invited to attend.

The $8 admission includes entry, a barbecued pork sandwich and a beverage. Attendees can get chances to win a frozen 10-pound turkey. Last year there were 55 lucky winners. This is a great opportunity to see the historic Jefferson House, where the club meets, support conservation and enjoy good company.

The Izaak Walton League is a national organization committed to conservation, preserving fish and wildlife habitats, and clean air and water. The Des Plaines Chapter is one of the country's oldest chapters founded in 1926, and has been housed in the historic Jefferson House on River Road since 1929.

So far this year, the chapter has hosted a Des Plaines Riverbank clean-up with Clean Up-Give Back, a program on bees and beekeeping, a bird walk, and a Halloween campfire and hike, all of which were open to the public. Plans are always in the works for future activities. In addition to its conservation outreach work and this annual Turkey Party, the club hosts a wild game dinner, tea and history program, and a pig roast.

Those interested in learning more about the club's work are welcome to attend any business meeting, held at 6:30 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month, at the historic Jefferson House, 1841 S. River Road, in Des Plaines.
