Wheaton Municipal Band welcomes guest conductor Jay Gephart, Purdue University's director of bands

In the tradition of welcoming guest conductors to the podium, the Wheaton Municipal Band has invited professor Jay S. Gephart to conduct the band Thursday, July 21.

The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. in Memorial Park in downtown Wheaton.

Gephart is the director of bands at Purdue University in Indiana.

Along with taking his marching band around the world, Gephart serves internationally as a clinician and guest conductor.

The musicians in the Wheaton Municipal Band not only are challenged by preparing a full concert in one rehearsal, but they also need to quickly acclimate to a new conductor and a different conducting style.

After 43 years as music director of the Wheaton Municipal Band, Bruce Moss knows how to use his limited rehearsal time and squeeze out every last minute of playing time. It is an art.

With a new conductor at the helm, the band sits at the edge of their seats and rises to the occasion.

For this concert, Gephart programs audience favorites like von Suppe's “Light Calvary Overture.”

This classic work shows off the boldness of the brass, the dexterity of the woodwinds, and the dynamic contrast of the ensemble. It's thrilling transposition from orchestra to band makes it a winner.

Two works by George Gershwin and two works of Alfred Reed balance the program.

In addition, there is the Latin groove of “Begin the Beguine” by Glen Osser. Nothing gets people swaying in their seats like a beguine. The form is similar to a slow rumba and keeps the percussion hopping.

There's even Mancini's “Pie in the Face Polka” from the movie “The Great Race.” It is a fun polka that shows off the humorous side of the band and the technique of the woodwind, especially the clarinets.

Come early and set up a lawn chair or enjoy the new stadium seating.
